Hi there! Im a 22M and I have absolutely no fashion, I've never been one to dress up or anything so I don't even know where to begin with style, cologne, or even like Body Washes. I just started using Tressemmé for my hair due to a friends recommendation, and im trying to dress up more. Where would a beginner start? Tbh, i dont even have a dresser but I do have a closet? If that helps. Please any recommendations for finding my style, comfort shoes that are fashionable, clothing recommendations, body wash, hair etc im an open book! Help a brother out!

Hi @Bread Bowl! For better answers, include:
- Reference pictures
- Budget in numbers
- Specific measurements
- Openness to buying secondhand and/or online
- Location: country/continent is fine
- Timing/urgency
Here I am dressed up a bit. Im 6'3/6'4 260lbs, I wear a 2x shirt (38 neck) 40/32 pants, and my shoe size is a 14 6E. My budget is decently open as I want to slowly expand over time, I am open to buying second hand but try to avoid online a bit as im worried it wouldn't fit? But not completely against it. Im in the U.S, Midwest area. Timing is non urgent as previously stated

as long as you’re clean you’re good on the soap department
we dont talk hair here either its in the rules
general style advice is usually look at pics of people wearing clothes, #waywt is a great source to get an idea of what some people are wearing and what directions you might want to take
this isnt something you can speedrun so prepare for a longer term and more mindful approach
Just read that! Apologies!
all good :)
to understand fit its best to take measurements of clothes that fit you well and use those for reference. always check size chart when buying online or ask for measurements buying second hand online
Absolutely! I just learned how to iron clothes for the first time too, I know its a long process but figured it better to start than never!
going into #waywt and #inspiration is a great starting point. you should do that and then come back and post those images here so we can talk about them
Ill do that now!!
and if you see anything you like in inspo or waywt, most everyone would be happy to talk about their decision making and such
I fuck with this heavy, this is a dope look
I see these like really high waisted pants a lot, is there a particular reason their so high on the hips? /genq?
they’re designed as such, high rise is a good term to search for that
exactly the type of questions and observations you should be making btw your first step is already very productive
wearing a suit casually is a little advanced, but you can def go down that road if you'd like to. Ethan (guy in that pic) is a big menswear writer so he's written a ton about how he dresses and why
I definitely enjoy the "gentleman" look if thats even the right term for it; im so used to dressing in stained clothes, hand-me-downs and baggy unfit clothes that the sophisticated look is exceptionally appealing
its a fun look
Oh awesome! Where can I find his stuff?
filter waywt from:zeometer for some more great looks with that tailoring direction
baggy and poorly fitting are two things and shouldnt be necessarily correlated
menswear/tailoring are the words you're looking for

Yeah in general I like the fit look; i think the main thing with that is baggy is what im used to wearing. It's exceptionally comfortable to me due to years of wearing and not knowing how to dress yk?
mhm, I think the distinction i'm making is that every pant you've linked would probably be around a straight/wide fit by name
and the difference you're seeing is in higher rises, pleats, and pressing
the high rise makes people look taller and therefore the pants might read is slimmer but they really arent
Southern Gothic as well as the Peaky Blinders look has me in a chokehold
Ohhhhh okay that makes sense.
Definitely agree. I have to do more research though, im not entirely sure how you properly fit baggy clothes
hi that's me 👋 will echo a lot of the sentiments, particularly the ones about it taking a lot of time
I'll let zeo take over since his style is a little closer to what you're wanting to dress like. But i'll check in later tn if you have any lingering questions
figuring out 'fit' was a longtime struggle for me; i grew up obese, lost and gained and lost a lot of weight, and had to contend with both overly loose and overly tight clothes. i think it's immensely helpful to think through the lens of "this looks cool how can i achieve this" so you're not excluding any options
i have a lot of influences defining what "cool" is to me that led to how i dress (including the aforementioned ethan) some of them are media, e.g. wes anderson films, fresh prince of bel air, and some are people. you might enjoy the following instagram accounts, either as direct inspiration or as potential directions

I love this outlook because I've been through the exact same thing. I appreciate this immensely
Thank you!!! Im going to look through all of their stuff! I think I've definitely "narrowed" it down to a more classical look with suits/buttons ups/and highrise/slimmer jeans in general. Not that im not open to other options though! Do you have any good shoe brand recommendations?
i would argue that the classical 'look' i/ethan/tylor/cirque/many others in that ilk have trend towards wider fit pants or jeans; wider fit doesn't mean 'parachute width' but moreso 'not tapered'
Forgive my ignorance here; what do you mean by tapered? Like in the waist or just the entire length or pants?
for shoes, when have you gotten your foot measured? if it's been a while i'd recheck the measurement to be sure. in terms of fitting 6E, i will defer to these people just from the title alone lol https://www.reddit.com/r/widefeet/comments/1bqdg7k/stop_recommending_wide_shoes_for_6e_feet_if_you/

the entire length of pant, though this is usually most obvious from the knee to the ankle
And then just in general I know there's probably a hundred stores, but do you have like a top 3 stores?
graphical example in this thread of tapered vs not tapered https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1392675338600841238
slim on the left, wider fit right

Oh i definitely completely mixed it up then, I much prefer the wide fit haha
nope, unless you count 'ebay' as a store lol.
just starting out, places like uniqlo, j.crew (they are overpriced, wait for sales), ralph lauren (see j.crew), and brooks brothers will have clothes in this style but EVEN BETTER is shopping secondhand
The problem is run into usually is my thighs are slightly larger than my waist, I got tree trunks, is there any way to fix that? Every pants I try on
find pants that fit your legs and get a tailor to adjust the waist size
Man I'm so glad I joined this server🤣🤣
unless you're working with a very high budget, learning what you like is incredibly expensive and 99% of us shop secondhand
also if something doesn't work out there's less of a sense of "oh shit i wasted a bunch of money"
Does anyone ever do the Amazon try before you buy? Is that viable?
the more you try on and buy clothes the better you get at it
what makes things more confusing is there are lots of different words that mean different things in regards to pants. I wear extremely wide pants and there isnt really a word I can call them other than wide which is where measurements come in handy. These have a 28" leg opening, but wide can be as narrow as like 18"

i don't really mess with amazon for ethical reasons, plus i've heard horror stories from those who have (not honoring the refunds due to shipping errors, etc)
Ohhhh okay okay
amazon generally also is full of cheap chinese crap frankly (not to say all clothes out of china are bad quality)
Ill check back in tomorrow, I have to hit the hay but I greatly appreciate the advice!!
