Generate shorter UUID?

Is there a good way to generate a shorter default id? It is going to be used as a non-secure code used to access a resource (think youtube video id). I could generate it client side but that opens up a can of worms. Any suggestions?

appreciate the response but I more meant as a postgres function similar to the one attached, but shorter

I was literally researching this recently. You don't want to import a lot of packages when all you needs is two basic functions... hope this helps:
