Let users sign in without verified email, but still require it

I found the option "confirm email" under auth settings and have disabled it, now my users can sign in without verifying their email which is exactly what I want. However I still want users to verify their email, and limit access to certain features until they do; however it appears that disabling "confirm email" just sets the email to already be verified on account creation.

Is there a way to allow sign in without a verified email, but still have the user verify it at some point?
