sound cutting out mid-game
been running a MP server the past few days, when one of the players reported their sound just suddenly and seemingly randomly cutting out entirely, only being fixed by fully shutting off the game and rebooting it. after he told me about it, it started to happen to me, too. and unfortunately, I'm the host, so having to shut the game off every time it happens is a problem. while it's less of an issue if I'm using a dedicated server, sometimes that's not a solution (we're playing with calamity, which, for some reason, has some bugs regarding using dedicated servers, so we're forced to not use it for some stuff and forced to use it for other stuff)
when the sound cuts out, the music keeps playing, but all footsteps, gunshots, hurt sounds, etc all shut off. if I then quit the game and go to the main menu, the music shuts off, too. only fix is to fully close the game and relaunch it.
while this could be a mod issue, the existence of the sound megathread over on the github leads me to believe it might be a tmodloader issue instead. it also might not be a MP-only bug. I can note that I did not have this issue until 1.4.4, though.
looking at the client.log, I found one line that looks relevant:
turns out this is unrelated. looking at other logs, there's nothing at the relevant timestamps
specs:
OS: win10
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
GPU: GTX 1660 Ti
RAM: 16GB
Boot Storage: SSD
server mods: https://puu.sh/JN4Tg/eb6a129437.png
client mods: https://puu.sh/JN9eS/9cd56e16ff.png
client.log is attached
[01:30:58.387] [Main Thread/WARN] [tML]: Failed to get legacy sound style for (68, 1) input.
unfortunately I booted the game after finding this line and closed before encountering the issue again (the MP session ended) so my logs refreshed. the only log I have available right now is the client.log. I'll be sure to edit this with the other logs the next time I encounter this issue.9 Replies

my guess is a sound file is missing, try verifying file integrity through steam

alright, verified, I'll let the other person know to attempt it as well. all files validated successfully (no notification of missing files), but it did then run an update.
I'll return with an update on if it worked or not after we next play (edit: we'll be playing <t:1691816400:R> so I'll be able to give some info after then)
multiple people have confirmed they are still getting the issue (I was away so I didn't get it myself yet)
I've checked one of their client logs, and they did not get the "missing legacy sound style" warning, so it might not be that

yep, got another client log and a sound bug again from another user, uploading the log now

just got the issue myself, and immediately after getting the issue I closed the server and checked the log. I see nothing here at the timestamp it should be.
also, everyone started getting it after the tmodloader update, so they're thinking it's probably a tmodloader issue too
potential hint for why it dies, usually the sound dies when we're killing stuff. like, right now there's a blood moon. I spawn in, kill a few enemies, and the sound immediately dies. it lags right before it happens, too
ok, doesn't happen exclusively with killing stuff. one player used a music box and soon afterwards all sound died

having the same issue...

Having same issue. I think its caused by too many sounds playing at once or something adjacent to that?
