T'\0' is what all the characters in "board" are initialized to. Presumably row 0 is the top of the board so if the value in the 0th row in the column has been set there is no more space in the column. Also: that character is called the null character.

TThe backwards slash when used in quotes or double quotes signifies the beginning of an "escape sequence". A return line is one of the possibilities ('\n') but there are others like '\t' for tab.
