Using `SynchronizedRef` for Concurrent Fiber-Safe Counter Incrementation

Is SynchronizedRef the right tool to use for a counter which could be safely incremented from multiple concurrent fibers?
EDIT: Looking at the api I guess 
Ref
 should be sufficient I don't need effectful updates?
