Error loading image - various filetypes
Hello! Thanks in advance for all your knowledge and help. I'm a newbie to self-hosting, and community support this is invaluable.
Issue
The issue I'm facing is that almost all of my photos and videos from 2019-now are not loading in Immich. Attached images 1 & 2 show how it looks on the web UI.
Context
My server is a mini PC running Arch, with Immich as a Docker container built via
docker compose
.
This weekend I exported my Apple Photos library (~29k files) on a Mac via File > Export > Export Unmodified Originals
. From there, I uploaded them to the Immich server via Immich's web UI. The upload ran over the course of a day, and completed with zero errors reported. However, most files from 2019-now appear to be (missing?/corrupt?/incompatible?). I feel like maybe the issue is HEIC and MOV files, but these should (to the extent of my knowledge) be supported by Immich. I'm also not 100% sure that the filetypes are the issue.
What I've tried
- I let the server sit for another day, just in case.
- I tried restarting the container via docker compose down
followed by docker compose up -d
.
- I poked around my Photos/
directory, and I can't seem to find any image files in library/
or upload/
. Which is odd, because images from before 2019 work just fine.

In order to be able to effectively help you, we need you to provide clear information to show what the problem is. The exact details needed vary per case, but here is a list of things to consider:
- Your docker-compose.yml and .env files.
- Logs from all the containers and their status (see above).
- All the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far.
- Any recent changes you've made to Immich or your system.
- Details about your system (both software/OS and hardware).
- Details about your storage (filesystems, type of disks, output of commands like fdisk -l
and df -h
).
- The version of the Immich server, mobile app, and other relevant pieces.

Yes, but only “Extracting metadata”, which I started manually after restarting the container
I'm not sure if that's required to run before thumbnails are generated? I seem to forget the order jobs atm
It’s not just thumbnails tho
I can’t view the image at all
If you open an image in immich, can you download it?
They download just fine, but I cannot view them in the web ui at all. see attached photo 2 of the original post - that’s what I see when I try to open it in the web ui
I think this is a different issue…it’s not just the thumbnail that’s broken
Please finish processing all jobs. Sounds like your "errors" will go away afterwards.
Thumbnail job generates multiple qualities of images, some are used as a preview
But shouldnt I be able to view the full image in the web ui, even if the thumbnail isn’t generated? All my pre-2019 images function that way
I'd suggest waiting until all jobs are completed
What you perceive as fact and what is actual fact may be different. There are no errors in your log that I saw pointing to anything
I was able to view all the other images before their thumbnails were generated but ok I’ll report back after I run the “Generate Thumbnails” job

Over the weekend, NONE of my images has thumbnails, but I was still able to view the older ones in the web ui
