Not understanding something with C#

Hello! I am following the unity documents on C# to learn but I don't seem to get something. In the docs it is showing me how to make a turret there is one line I don't understand. "Rigidbody p = Instantiate(projectile, transform.position, transform.rotation);" I don't get what the p is for but I did see it again in the line that says "p.velocity = transform.forward * speed;" but I still don't understand what it's there for.
