mega heating up a bit

heya! my understanding is that arduino MEGAs can handle 9v power just fine, but im using 9v and mine's getting a bit warm in unusual places. nothing scorching but i'd just like to confirm that its not a big issue.

a Mega can handle 7v to 12v on Vin if your circuit draws to much current on the 5v, 3.3v, or a GPIO pin things may heat up

well it seems to heat up slightly faster when i have a pushbutton wired to it even though i have a step resistor does the orientation of the button matter? like, does it need to be flipped or something okay so i made the pushbutton work on usb power without heating but using barrel 9v still heats up the area around the barrel jack is that common? my understanding is that, since the arduino uses a 5v regulator, it still has to dissipate a lot of power as heat

the barrel jack itself (nor anything) should get hot. with 9v in the voltage regulator has to dissipate power as heat to drop the voltage to 5v. if things are getting hot I suspect you have your button or some other component wired wrong and too much power is being dissipated in the regulator.

thanks for the reply btw the odd thing is that it doesn't heat up whatsoever when i plug it in via usb the first area that gets warm is these solders

they stay cool for like a good 20 seconds after getting plugged in and then promptly jump like 10 degrees it occurs to me that my battery pack is also a bit warm on the ends maybe i shouldn't have mixed the rechargables and normals okay well i used only single-use batteries that are all 1.5v and they still heat up the solders i pictured above

sorry, there is just no way the barrel jack should be getting hot 🙂 it doesn't get hot when using USB because the voltage regulator is not in use with USB the device next to the jack is the voltage regulator, if it's getting hot something is drawing way too much current
