Streaming Workflow Using Copilot Kit

Is there a working example of using Copilot Kit with an agent that has a workflow attached to it, and having that workflow steps being streamed to Copilot Kit and being displayed in the chat. I can get it working for tools, but for workflows, it is not working.

For that to be natively supported, the underlying AG-UI protocol needs to implement this proposal first. Then the Mastra integration can follow and support it in
Good news is that a few hours ago there was the bi-weekly steering committee meeting for AG-UI and this proposal was an agenda item. So this topic might gain some traction in the coming days.
I'm not saying you couldn't make it work, but you would need to hack together something that likely wouldn't cover edge cases and the official support would definitely be my bet for production use.

Hey @Sebastian - Thank you! This is very helpful. One question on that are stepStarted and stepFinished not events for workflow steps? https://docs.ag-ui.com/concepts/events#stepstarted. How are people currently displaying an agents step by step plan and thne having user accept an agent execute on that plan?

There's a demo here that shows how you can model an editable task list using an agent and a human-in-the-loop step in the frontend that might help you.
If you only need to visualize the steps it's even easier because you could just register a frontend tool that your agent can call with the steps it wants to perform without needing to wait for a response from the user.

Thank you @Sebastian ! I did see this before, and sorry if this is a bad question, but one thing I have been confused abt is how the different hooks work rn. As I see it rn, I have my Mastra agent with certain tools to complete certain actions.

Using the UseRenderTool, I can pass a tool with the same name and anytime a that tool is called, it will follow those rendering patterns, which is p straight forward.

The useFrontendTool allows your agent to display anything on the screen, so it could display the step checklist for example and then it will automatically start going through those steps and can check them off as it goes along similar to how claude code does.

Then the useHumanInTheLoop is the same as the frontend, except the agent will pause and allow the user to interact with it before continuing.

So going back to your first point, if we have a workflow that currently runs in Mastra , our 3 currently stable options would be to either not attach it to an agent and stream the workflow on its own using their streamVNext, attach the workflow to our mastra agent but not have it stream workflow updates, or wait until that draft is released?

This whole human interaction space is super interesting and exciting to see where its going. Im working at an AI consutling startup and its v interesting to see how big a role it plays in clients experience

I think you're basically right about the 3 stable options. There might be a 4th by using working memory (shared state in CopilotKit) to have a medium that you can update from workflows and read on the frontend. But I'm not sure whether or not that would be stable enough for production use.

I'm currently working around the issue by softly enforcing a workflow through the agent prompt and giving it an order in which to call frontend tools.
That's ok enough for me if the workflow is not critical, but more like a preferred order of things that the user can break out of.

@wiz2202 thanks for sharing - I actually started with CopilotKit and switched to AI SDK on the way to implement it very similar to what he does in the video (sometimes feels like I'd only have to wait a couple of weeks and get everything for free :D).
It's been some days, but from what I remember the thing that threw me off was that the CopilotKit implementation had no API for calling workflows explicitly and wouldn't pass on the data messages.
The AI SDK implementation is much more flexible in that regard. I'm currently trying to reach a point where I found a solid pattern and try to boil it down into an API myself (see Workflow Support in @mastra/react)). It's a bit rough around the edges right now if you want to stream from within a workflow step, but there's Help: Cannot stream anything from workflows after recent update and I guess it won't be long until things like that are fixed as well.
I'll try to remember this thread if I make significant progress down the line and keep you updated.

@Sebastian I think we are switching to AI SDK as well to gain more control. I have a hook that I created which handles workflow runs in isolation and then the useChat from AI SDK works for streaming chats with agents bu still struggling to figure out how to stream the workflows within the chat
