how would i go about accepting vanilla multiplayer invites from tmod?

there's now a way to let tmod clients connect to vanilla hosts, i've tried it on dedicated servers by connecting via IP, and it works.
but i want to be able to play with my friends as a tmod client, as there are some mods that i really like to use (high fps support, unlocked zoom etc).
clicking on game invites on steam does nothing- is there another way i can connect? maybe somehow getting the peer2peer server ip? or somehow installing tmodloader ontop of vanilla terraria so that steam thinks it's launching vanilla terraria?
