Change Hex value (Color) as approaching target

beginnerintermediate
Basically, I have a digital thermometer that starts at 2000 and maxes at 8000. Would it be possible to have the color gradually shift from green to yellow to orange to red as it approaches the temperature? Would it require some semi complex algorithm or would it be as simple as some basic arithmetic to determine the corresponding value?
Everything is 100% digital by the way. No irl circuits or anything to worry about.
