hardware acceleration - lxc, gpu passthrough, OCR not using GPU at all but works for transcoding?

does OCR not really use the gpu or am i missing something here?
I am passing a gpu through to my LXC container, with drivers installed on host/lxc, i can see in nvtop or nvidia-smi that it's using the gpu for transcoding but not OCR at all. The documentation seems to suggest it does work for OCR.
I used the helper script from community scripts so it's not running in a docker instance.
