Immich server 'crashes' on generate missing thumbnails.

I've got an instance of immich running that's connected to an external library (in an lxc), and I keep running into the issue where immich crashes (or seems to) as soon as I press generate missing thumnails. Ram and Swap don't seem to be throttling so it seems to have enough.
The strange thing is that it generates 'all' thumbnails without issue for a little while, but instantly fails on the missing thumbnails–ultimately both fail and 'crash ' the container. I've seen this problem around but nothing I've tried seems to work.
