Setup-Token 401 "Invalid Bearer Token" — Full Troubleshooting Log
OpenClaw 2026.2.2-3 | Claude Code 2.1.32 | Claude Max | macOS 15.6 arm64 (Mac Mini)
Every setup-token I generate is immediately rejected: HTTP 401 authentication_error: Invalid bearer token. OpenClaw puts anthropic into cooldown, TUI shows (no output).
What I've tried (all failed):
Multiple claude setup-token → openclaw models auth setup-token --provider anthropic cycles
/setup-token from inside Claude Code sessions
openclaw configure, openclaw onboard — full re-setup multiple times
Deleted & regenerated auth-profiles.json from scratch
Removed old Claude app, fresh brew install --cask claude
Claude Code opens fine ("Opus 4.6 · Claude Max"), responds to messages in-session — but tokens it generates are DOA
Cleaned orphaned claude-cli provider entries from config
Fixed version mismatch (config pointed to 2.1.30, system runs 2.1.32)
Confirmed no env vars, no ~/.anthropic/, no conflicting shell configs
Gateway healthy, all channels OK, openclaw doctor clean
Current state:
Default: anthropic/claude-sonnet-4-5
anthropic profiles=1 (token=1, api_key=0)
anthropic:manual=token:sk-ant-o...MKU29l9H [cooldown]
Claude Code works interactively. Setup-tokens are dead on arrival when OpenClaw uses them.
Questions:
Is anyone successfully using setup-tokens with Max on 2026.2.2+ right now?
Is this broadly broken? I've seen multiple others reporting the same 401 in the last few days.
Any workaround besides switching to API key billing?
