Disabling auto-save of message history while keeping working memory enabled?

Is it possible to disable auto-save of message history while keeping working memory enabled?
I'm in a scenario where I'd rather "own" when/where the history of messages is saved, but at the same time i want to keep the built-in "working memory".
Is that something possible?
