Codex CLI (gpt-5.3-codex) broken — handshake rejection + wrong API format
Running into a two-layer issue trying to use Codex CLI with OpenClaw:
Layer 1 — Gateway handshake rejection:
The Codex connector sends a client.id that isn't in the gateway's allowlist (client-info.ts → primitives.ts → frames.ts). Connection gets killed before auth or model logic even runs. Log shows: invalid connect params: at /client/id: must be equal to constant; ... anyOf
Layer 2 — Wrong API format in built-in catalog:
Even if the handshake passed, gpt-5.3-codex is registered in the built-in model catalog with api: "openai-completions" instead of openai-codex-responses. This causes HTTP 500s from OpenAI's API since Codex expects a different request format.
What we tried:
• Custom provider entries → breaks built-in handler
• Template aliases → wrong API format gets cloned
• codex-cli mode (spawning the binary) → process lifecycle issues with sub-agents
• No config-level workaround exists
