getting 10-16x cost with Anthropic API
Subject: Excessive cache_write costs — Haiku should not cost $8/day
Hey team — new user here, 3 days in and already at $33. I've done everything right (Haiku default, archived workspace files, contextTokens capped at 50k, heartbeat at 2h) and costs are still $5-8/day driven almost entirely by input_cache_write_5m tokens.
The data:
Feb 14: 6,007,083 cache write tokens → only 3,565,956 reads back. Paid to write cache that never got reused.
My entire workspace is under 6KB. Something is writing 500K-6M tokens to cache every session that isn't my files.
Specific questions:
What is actually being written to cache if workspace files are only 6KB?
Is memorySearch.experimental.sessionMemory: true caching full session history on every request?
Is there a way to extend cache TTL beyond 5 minutes to avoid constant re-writes?
Does every heartbeat trigger a full cache re-write?
