installing openclaw locally from git repo

i want to be able to clone the openclaw git repo and checkout a versions (e.g. v2026.2.26). into /opt/openclaw and install it
i have built openclaw in docker many times doing this with the script for docker; however, i want to install it directly on the VPS so openclaw can manage the whole server (note: its locked down with firewall, fail2ban, only allows ssh with key and my IP address) - i use socksproxy to get into it to chat so only running on localhost.
how do i do the install from the git repo?
or do i have to run the one liner command (i would rather manage the verisons and upgrades myself)

Solution
These are solid notes to leave for the next Rocky user. A few tweaks I’d suggest so people don’t hit the same potholes again:
- Don’t run
(matches the repo’s
- Add the missing “gateway mode” step (this was the reason the service boot was blocked):
- Add the “NSolid gotcha” check (since it broke your service):
Key fixes / improvements
- You don’t need the Python 3.12 venv stuff for OpenClaw. The only Python requirement is “apython3python3- Don’t run
