The gateway's QMD manager keeps respawning the embed process on each SIGUSR1 restart, and each spawn wastes ~2 min on a failed CUDA build before falling back to CPU, so embeddings never finish.

Solution

“Always empty results” with QMD is usually not a JSON/output mismatch — if the gateway can’t parse QMD’s

output, it will log something like qmd query returned invalid JSON
qmd query returned invalid JSON
and the call typically errors/falls back, not “quietly empty”.

The common “quietly empty” causes in OpenClaw’s QMD backend are:

1) QMD scope policy is denying the search (very common in channels)

By default,

memory.qmd.scope

memory.qmd.scope

is DM-only. In a Discord channel,

memory_search

memory_search

will return

[]

[]

.

Check gateway logs for:

qmd search denied by scope (...)

Fix (allow just this channel session key), e.g.:
