all the time, but they mess it up if you aren't careful -- I always include the instruction to make a backup of the file before editing, ONLY edit the parts that need editing (don't overwrite anything else), never add any configuration parameters without checking whether they exist first, and after the edit, verify that you did not overwrite anything accidentally by comparing it to the backup, and only if it passes verification, do you restart the gateway. it's pretty dumb that you have to do all that, but i have arrived at this conclusion after a lot of pain. all the agent has to do is assume that a parameter exists or is called something and be wrong, and the gateway restart will fail and you'll have to manually edit the json file. if this happens, just ask a cloud AI in the browser what to do by pasting the entire json in (with sensitive items removed first) and asknig it what's wrong.
