Goal: Implement Option A (clean upstream checkout + separate local infra overlay) so future upgrades are boring and don’t rely on worktrees/tribal knowledge.
Current known-good runtime state (DO NOT BREAK):
Gateway (VPS Docker): OpenClaw 2026.3.2
Mac node: core 2026.3.2, connected via SSH tunnel
Invariants to preserve:
gateway.bind = loopback
gateway.nodes.browser.mode = auto
tools.exec.ask = off
Compose dir: /home/linuxuser/openclaw
Compose service: openclaw-gateway
Gateway container: openclaw-openclaw-gateway-1
Compose files currently used (per labels):
docker-compose.yml and docker-compose.override.yml
Important gotchas we already hit:
1) docker-compose.override.yml is JSON syntax (YAML-compatible), so greps for image: may miss "image": ...
2) The custom image openclaw:local-uv is built with Dockerfile.gateway-uv
3) Dockerfile.gateway-uv is FROM openclaw:local → so upgrades require building openclaw:local first, then openclaw:local-uv
4) Bun/QMD fixes required in the Dockerfile:
use absolute bun path for qmd install:
RUN /home/node/.bun/bin/bun install -g @tobilu/qmd
set PATH explicitly:
ENV PATH="/home/node/.local/bin:/home/node/.bun/bin:${PATH}"
Persistence mounts discovered:
Host persisted OpenClaw dir is under /home/rapture/.openclaw (but permissions are non-trivial; backups required sudo tar)
What Option A means (target structure):
Keep /home/linuxuser/openclaw as a clean upstream checkout (tagged releases).
Move all local infra to uniquely named “won’t-collide-with-upstream” files, e.g.:
docker-compose.local.json (local compose overlay)
Dockerfile.gateway-uv.local (custom Dockerfile)
wrapper script compose-local.sh so we always run compose with -f docker-compose.yml -f docker-compose.local.json
Keep .env as secrets-only (never committed).
Constraints: one command at a time; confirm output each step; rollback step before destructive changes.

What we’ll do in the new thread (high-level plan)
1) No-downtime refactor first
Create the new local overlay + wrapper script
Verify with docker compose ... config that it resolves to the same images/mounts/env
Do not restart anything
2) Make repo clean
Ensure /home/linuxuser/openclaw is checked out at v2026.3.2 (or current stable)
Ensure local infra files can never block future checkouts
3) Optional final validation
One controlled docker compose up -d --force-recreate ... (only if you want)
Before proceeding, we must also regenerate these read-only facts at the top (so you don’t rely on memory):
1) Exact current image IDs (for rollback)
2) Exact mount sources (to avoid the “looks like data loss” mistake)
3) Exact resolved compose config for the gateway service (image + build dockerfile + volumes)
4) Exact contents (or at least key lines) of:
your local compose overlay
