proton ge or wine ge
Which of the 2 should be used, wine ge or proton ge in heroic games launcher and what is their difference other than that proton ge is for steam.

Proton's target is Steam so it has bunch of Steam specific stuff that is not helpful in Heroic+ due to its nature there is a potential to cause issues ( eg, cloud saves for example )
Wine GE is a Wine build which means doesn't target usage with Steam. Full name is Wine GE Proton , that is due to it carries patches from Proton upstream. So it still offers same game compat as Proton GE but does it for non Steam environments.
I use Wine GE on non Steam games.

Prefer Wine-GE, if a game doesn't work with that try with Proton-GE (I did find like 3 or 4 games in my library that wouldn't work with Wine-GE out of the box and do work out of the box with Proton-GE)

Also I avoid changing wine versions as much as possible.. For me, its been pretty rare that the wine version is the issue preventing the game from working.
Almost always its a dll that needs installation or similar
wouldn't work with Wine-GE out of the box and do work out of the box with Proton-GEStill puzzled how this is possible, considering they're the same wine version (just that one has DXVK and such builtin)

yeah, no idea, I already tested over 300 games, I found 3 games so far that didn't work out of the box with wine-ge but did with proton-ge (fallout 3, the lion's song, battletech)
IIRC Fallout 3 was something about GST libs (but that should also happen on Proton?)
If you have the time, a game log with Wine-GE & a
PROTON_LOG
with Proton of those games would help. Who knows, maybe it's something we can add to Heroicwise-white•3y ago
for fallout 3 for example the sound was really glitchy in wine-ge, with proton-ge it worked fine, for battletech if failed because of missing
mono runtime
, with the lion's song I don't remember, I didn't any note either on my list
I'll do another pass on the games that I couldn't get to work with wine-ge and the ones I couldn't get to work at all after I finish testingdeep-jade•3y ago
Battletech is just a unity game fwiw, so it shouldnt have issue, except we didnt encode the videos in a format that generally works in wine like stuff
Then again, I have it on steam so never really tried wine-ge with it
