what are must have colors for dress socks?
Also any recommendation on fabric material would be greatly appreciated too. Heard merino wool is great but pretty expensive. How's bamboo?

Merino or bust. Black, grey. Color doesn’t matter much especially if your pants are tailored correctly. If you’re gonna do loafs and rolled trousers, etc, just go full out and do white socks.

Color does matter when you're sitting down, your socks will be visible.
In traditional tailoring your sock colour would match your dress pants. So you can just work backwards from there.
For fabric I prefer cotton for work horses or merino wool. The latter costs more.
