Brannock size to dress shoe size

I'm a 10D on the Brannock, but 10D is MASSIVE when I tried on Allen Edmond's in store. Eventually settled with a 8.5D AE's with the help of the store representative. Is this normal? I'm looking to buy more dress shoes but man the sizing is so whack I might as well fly to NYC and get fitted in person

I have found AE to be tts with brannock. Is it possible you were reading the device wrong?

Shoe sizes are dumb af like 90 percent of the time. Try em on if you can, if not, make sure they’ve got a very generous return policy and order a couple pairs

i stood up, wore dress socks, measured both feet. Toe length was 10, arch (the ball of my feet on the instep) is 10

I'm still learning about leather footwear, but most that I have tried on are 1/2 size smaller than Brannock. A few are a full size smaller.

Being a full size and a half off is crazy, I don’t have any shoes that are that far off brannock Depending on the brand you may be able to find internal measurements for the different sizes So you don’t have to guess

I've never been 1.5 off. Usually 0.5, rarely 1

There is almost zero chance that your actual brannock size is 10D and a size 8.5D actually fit you. I’d confirm it was an actual brannock device and read the instructions and size yourself. AE sales reps are almost universally dogshit at sizing people for some reason. It’s not that hard

Occasionally, shell cordovan shoes are bigger than expected. Do you remember what model of AE you tried on?

it's not shell cordovan, it's the park avenue oxfords (65 last) I got it off of amazon for $60, it says it's authentic but maybe it isn't?? I was talking to other ppl and they were saying I could have low volume feet or smth

go to any shoe store and use the brannock there, its free I know weve moved off reddit but if youre having trouble reading it post photos on r/goodyearwelt and someone will help you out

I'm not a 100% sure if it fits right -- there's about a thumbs width extra in length, it's a bit snug, vamp is close to foot, midsole is snug and minimal heel slippage. It seems like my arch aligns with the arch of the shoe i did, it seems like they had similar responses to this thread here I might have to visit a foot doctor and ask or smth

did you post pictures on GYW?

I posted pics for some boots and pics of my Brannock measurements. I guess it's hard to tell the fit of boots from pics, but I'm almost confident I read the Brannock correctly (and assuming it is genuine which I think it is)

ill defer to the people ober there, theyre the experts

I’m a mod of GYW lol It’s likely the 65 last is just wonky for you. It’s a weird last in general You can add brannock pics and such here

maybe... I tried on Kent Wang's shoes (they're a discontinued line) and I tried their loafers and a size 8 fit right (anything larger the heel slippage was crazy) Brannock: https://imgur.com/a/oabnJFD AE 8.5D Park Ave currently wearing: https://imgur.com/a/n4mTCwX (please pardon the sock color, I've got more dress socks on the way)

I've only worn the AE's for like a couple days, so it's a bit stiff (I'd figure it would loosen as I break them in. A bit tight near the pinky toe width wise but I think that will loosen up over time)

The shoes are small technically
moihbalphw
moihbalphw16mo ago
like they look small in the pic?

The parts marked in red are supposed to touch completely in this style of shoe

Ll beans is right that the last may not be for you
moihbalphw
moihbalphw16mo ago
hmm I could probably pull the laces in tighter. Although the store representative said that if they were touching right now, if the shoe loosens over time, then the parts would overlap

I don’t know who the 65 last was made for lol

maybe... I went to AE in store since that's the only store nearby i was hoping to try stuff in store cuz you know you could actually try them on there
bishopcorrigan
bishopcorrigan16mo ago
Yeah that’s true but I wouldn’t expect them to stretch quite that much

If you’re okay with the ‘V’ it’s not a huge issue usually but it’s something that bugs me personally
bishopcorrigan
bishopcorrigan16mo ago
Yeah that’s why I added technically as a caveat, it’s old school

awburkey16mo ago
They won’t stretch that much I’d say 10D-ish is right for your brannock. The AE 65 last is just a huge pain. If you like they shoes and they seem to fit go for it. Just make sure your toes are comfy

moihbalphw16mo ago
i can wiggle my toes, pinky toe is a bit squished on the side, but I'm not sure if that's part of the break in process. No pain when walking so far I heard Meermin is good but I might have to play the shipping/return game which I'm not too fond of... or I should fly to NYC and fit them on in person! I just tied my shoes tighter and the V isn't as big anymore
awburkey
awburkey16mo ago
Yeah that’s the biggest barrier for Meermin. I’d check out Grant stone. Similar price point but I’d bet the lasts will fit better
bishopcorrigan
bishopcorrigan16mo ago
I will say I did meermins with just tracings and measurements and they nailed it but yeah it’s a spooky thing to go for As long as you’re comfortable like beans said
awburkey
awburkey16mo ago
For your pinky toe you can either break them in or use a shoe stretcher with one of those add-ons. I don’t like stretching shoes for a size change, but for a hot spot like a cramped pinky toe I think they work great Oh dang nice
