Overcoat sizing

Haven't really lived anywhere that needs a proper coat, so I'm a bit clueless when it comes to sizing them. This one is an XL, a size larger than I'd buy for other items. Is the fit OK? Is sizing up normal or is it a maker-dependent thing?

c.f. this old wool one I saw recently - definitely a bit big I think, felt like I was wrapped in a bolt of cloth when done up (and way too heavy for sydney weather)

Are you going to wear a sweater/jacket underneath it? The second one looks too big on you imo, but that's more the cut than the raw size. First one looks good but a little shorter than what I'd like. But longer overcoats are more formal so it depends what you like and are looking for

The fit actually seems perfect on the first coat - body length and shoulders in particular are perfect. Sleeves look just a touch short but not a huge deal.

I think the second one is way better

The second one looks better but I think it's not down to size but to the actual coat

yeah I think I'd rather have a longer one, and prefer the look of wool coats (it's hard to find ones with the right weight though) I think I have room to layer under the first one. yeah I'm eternally cursed with monkey arms so I usually just take the L there yeah I agree, I'd prefer a wool one myself, and love the big lapels
