why is immich taking up so much storage space of media files?

Hi. I think I have something wrong with my configuration of Immich. Why is it taking up so much space??
I only uploaded one album of 1840 media files that are about 32 gigs…
The total usage of storage on Immich website server stats reports 32gig used… but on the server it takes up triple that.
Is encoding of videos required? What is the upload directory and how to purge it?
