What are all the uses of the file hash?

I ask because I am fixing the metadata of many of my and my family’s pictures. I am mostly editing the GPS and Time-related EXIF tags. So far, things usually work. When I edit the date, the asset is moved to the corresponding folder (per my folder structure). I am concerned at some point, this is going to mess up something.

Note: I have had a bad experience with XMP files – I misplaced them when moving pics, etc. – my mistake, but it is something that I worry might happen again. So, I would prefer to avoid using .xmp files
My questions are along these lines.
- What is the exact purpose of the hash? (Just to avoid uploading duplicates?)
- And are there plans, or do you foresee any other uses for it?
- What all information from the asset is used to generate that hash?
- What should I look out for – to realize something is wrong with Immich’s database?
