What would you wear under this?

https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/lovat-moleskin---field-jacket-m251743-fld-jkt-fw22 This one has been giving me trouble. Got it a few months ago but can’t seem to figure out what to wear underneath. It looks great under an oatmeal turtleneck sweater but not much else. Looks okay with a denim or olive shirt. I’m thinking it’d look good under a light brown shirt though but I’m worried it might just not look good under any collared shirt, at least while buttoned. Doesn’t seem casual enough to wear with a t shirt either. At the same time doesn’t seem formal enough to throw a tie underneath as well. I’m at a loss. Thoughts? (Note: It’s a little more brown than the picture suggests)

Striped OCBD. Knit tie. Or a Breton tee.

Oh yeah a knit tie would be good to bridge the formality gap I got a navy Breton I could try it with, good idea Vertical stripes for that OCBD I presume? I’d think a brown/beige would work nicely

Yeah, Kamakura had a brown uni stripe I think could work well. You might also soften it a bit and go for a pink/lavender/yellow?

I love field jackets. I wear them pretty casually most of the time: jeans or chinos, t-shirts. Moleskin especially is a fairly casual material If I wanted to dress it up, I'd think OCBD or flannel shirts first, along with chinos, or some less-formal dress-adjacent pants. Once I bust out the tie I kind of want the sport coat tbh but you could certainly wear it like you'd wear, say, a linen or cotton sport coat: more-casual ties, more-casual shirts, more-casual trousers, more-casual shoes. Let's say, for example, a knit or multi-paisley tie, or something along the cotton-linen-wool tie spectrum; textured shirt of some sort; chinos or wool-silk-linen or cotton-silk-linen trousers; brogued non-black shoes.

Thanks for the ideas! So I’m totally clear to wear it with casual stuff, good to know And good ideas for the casual-ish spectrum. I could use a few more textured shirts. I just bought a light brown plain dress shirt, might cancel that order and get something a little more textured instead

Off-color dress shirts (ie, dress shirts that are dress shirts in every way except the color is not really traditional for a dress shirt) are fine too, as a casual-er option.

Other people far more knowledgable than me have already commented, but this looks super versatile. I wouldn’t hesitate to wear this casually.

Good to hear. Guess it’s one of those things I have to do a few times to get used to
