Sportcoat or mismatched suit jacket?
I'm interested in this Suit/Sport coat:

But one thing I'm confused about. I learned from you guys on here that manufacturers will often sell suit seperates that actually look bad when worn seperately. I am trying to learn if that is the case here. Does the jacket look OK without the matching pants? What about the pants without the jacket?

It has texture, will be fine as separated jacket
donegal and patch pockets will absolutely work as an odd jacket
the kind of tailored jackets you want to avoid as odd jackets are worsted wool like this one https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/vbc---super-150%27s---navy---full-canvas--813-6015568-neost-01-ss23
thanks for clarifying, and what about the pants in the OP? Can those be worn without the jacket?
I shared a sport coat on here a little while ago and was told it looked like a mismatched suit seperate
hmm, I disagree with whoever said that that's a mismatched suit separate, it's clearlry not a worsted, looks kinda hopsack-ish
but it also isn't my favorite odd jacket
yes they can but I don't recommend navy odd trousers. You can probably make the donegal ones work given the nice texture, but grays and browns are going to, generally speaking, be easier to work with
ok thanks
yeah it was sold as a sport coat from Brooks that I really struggle to find anything to match it
I'm trying to buy a suit for my 40th birthday party, what do you think of the blue donegal vs the oatmeal or this mid blue courdury from SuSu?

I would customize the SuSu jacket to be a single breast with 2 buttons and possibly lose the Peak lapels
spier's site isn't loading for me for some reason, can you post a screenshot
Cant figure out if I'm just not cool enough to pull off that courduroy
that model is a lot sexier and cooler than me lol
they're all pretty interesting suits - any of them would do as a bday party suit, I guess it just depends what you want to get out of this
if you're looking for something that will be versatile if broken into separates, I'd go with a dark gray or dark brown
I dont actually own any cold weather casual suits, and I work from home, so its purely for wearing out for fun
with similar texture to the ones you've posted
what If I'm just looking for the dopest suit and don't care if I can't wear it seperate?
then those are dope suits
Spier doesn't load for me either, weird
My 2c: The oatmeal, the dusty-navy blue tweed, and the coduroy are all perfectly good as separates
Both jacket and trousers can be worn separately
I think maybe the problem is lighting. If I look really closely I can see it has texture but a better photo would make it obvious
Assuming it has as much texture as I think it does, it's totally good as a sport coat, no problem.
A light gray smooth worsted plain weave no pattern jacket would be a bit tough as a blazer. Doable, but a bit tough especially by american standards
Apologies for terrible photos. Some of these might be decent inspiration (all from my experimental fridays / shitbox selfie days):
Spier site has been broken lately
Hmm not finding my other photos with these
But anyways my trivial go-to is: white or ice blue shirt, blue pants, black or brown shoes. Being more casual jackets I tend to pair them with more casual ties.
oh wow my knot in the above photo is shit :(
I see thanks. So it's sort of like the more casual it is the easier it is to look like a "sport coat" than an orphaned suit jacket
It sounds like you guys like all 3 of those. I'm leaning towards the SuSu corduroy. That one I can also probably see in person as well before buying. Although I do love that oatmeal Donegal as well lol. I think Spier has return fees now so more risky
Do you like the peak lapels it comes with or should I change to the notch or maybe the straight peak which seems a little skinnier.
IMO if you want the dopest suit, keep it double breasted with peak lapels
I've never tried a DB suit, I have a belly so I'm worried about that factor
Why do you like the DB?
It's just more interesting than a typical suit if you're looking for exciting birthday garms
DBs are more dramatic and interesting. Esp when worn open
I fuckin' hate DBs worn open but it is a free country, you do you :P
is the fit different compared to single breast? specifically in the midsection, just trying to get an understanding if my belly will be in the way
Depends on the cut of the jacket
@drew_fc your original jacket doesn’t look to be in their “neo cut,” but just FYI Spier customer service told me their neo cut suit jackets and sport coats are the exact same cut, so as long as it’s neo cut it should be generally interchangeable
DB and SB are obviously shaped differently because of the closure, but chest and waist measurements that fit one should fit the other
The difference is usually the pocket detailing, and that’s it
