opinions on long coats?

I’m debating whether or not I should pull the trigger on an (ankle-ish?) length overcoat. On one hand I love the style, on the other I feel as if it’s something that will quickly turn impractical: it’s harder to feasibly wear indoors and, since I’m usually inside, in a car, or walking trails (where dirt might get on it), I worry that it won’t get much use. If you own one, what do you think? Do you wear it as often as you’d like?

Maybe it would be helpful to think of a long coat as something used only in certain contexts. In this case, it’s for cold weather when you want to look fashionable in a professional setting. For hiking, I would use a different piece of outerwear, something more technical.

I always support big coats. I have a few so here's my 2 cents. If it's warm indoors you can take it off. If it's cold it's not impractical. If I'm running errands and getting in and out of the car, I just leave it on. If you're worried about dirt you might want a shorter coat, like just past the knees or midcalf. I haven't had issues with dirt on any of mine though, and it can get real muddy here. If you have a piece you love, you'll find excuses to wear it.

I have a similar problem where I mostly get around by bike so long coats are somewhat impractical as beautiful as they are 😢

When I lived in NYC I wore long coats all the time. Now out in the burbs I find them less appealing
