Can one wear a charcoal sports coat with grey pants?

Is it an all right combination or will it look like a mismatched suit?

The MFA police will immediately arrest you. (Just kidding.) If they are too similar it will probably look wrong. If they have some contrast, I think it could work. Post pics?

dark jackets are a bit harder to wear as separates but it can be pulled off. consider going for a tonal look if possible (i.e., wear gray/charcoal/black under the jacket) if you've got a pair of solid black trousers then that'd play better with something like a normal white shirt obligitory examples from my favorite tailor:

The problem to me is like... what does charcoal mean? I bet you could pull off the following charcoal jackets as blazers or sport coats: 1. Flannel, especially woolen flannel - probably 2. Tweed - almost definitely 3. Corduroy - definitely 4. Herringbone - probably 5. Something with patch pockets - maybe. Triple patch - even more likely. Especially paired with soft shoulders 6. Silver or gold buttons - probably, if a bit unusual 7. Subtle windowpane - maybe 8. Subtle tartan - maybe 9. Less suble tartans, windowpanes, glen checks, and other checks - probably. (Can still be charcoal-charcoal, just less subtle) 10. Linen - maybe, probably 11. Unstructured jacket - maybe 12. Wool/silk/linen or similar blends with visible slub - maybe/probably etc But yknow. Take your standard smooth worsted wool, plain weave, natural shoulders, flap pockets, etc? Probably not. Unless you're European then go for it

Oh, just stumbled on this coincidentally. Whether you believe this is a good look is up to you, but I would say... worth thinking about maybe? https://www.styleforum.net/threads/mc-general-chat.310166/post-11552743

Hi, I am looking to dress these suits down and wanted to get everyone’s opinion on some options I’ve been thinking about. How would you go about dressing these suits down? Not easy to dress down a suit, and even not reasonable in my opinion, as the suit is the epitome of formality. The...

I haven't decided to buy anything yet. Wait, what does being European have to do with it? It'd be a flannel jacket with soft shoulders and patch pockets. It'd be paired with either corduroys or flannel slacks. I am also thinking about getying a charcoal jacket in a tropical wool which would be paired with chinos and dress wool trousers.

Europeans do the "broken suit" thing regularly and Americans don't. That's basically the difference. Context is king and for whatever reason that context is different across the pond. They don't worry about "orphaned suit jacket." Flannel, soft shoulders, patch pocket: I think you can pull it off. Tropical wool is gonna be much harder.

I have heard thst, but from what I gather they usually do it with differently coloured suits.
