Tuxedo fit advice

Got a new tux from spier and Mackey for a wedding and am stuck on sizing. The 38R felt tighter than I wanted (especially with a ventless jacket) but the 40 felt really big (though the 34” pants fit way better and I’ll keep those regardless). Love to get any thoughts - first set of photos are the 38. Apologies for the dirty mirror (it’s my gfs I swear)

Oh, that's tough lighting dude. Lights are to your face, camera to your back... black cloth ... So, the back of the 38 is definitely too slim, you can see how it hugs the form a little too much. The front appears to be pulling a bit on the 38 as well. More than a tiny bit

Yeah that’s how I felt on the 38 too - sorry for the lightning I don’t have someone else to take photos today

Far as I can see, chest and collar on the 38 looks fine. Length okay, maybe would be better a tad longer, but black on black with that lighting I honestly cannot tell. I don't feel like fucking with the photo to regain the contrast

I’ll probably take both to a tailor to see if it’s better to let out the 38 or adjust the 40

Front and back on the 40 look better. Length on the 40 looks fine. On both of them, it seems like the sleeve pitch isn't exactly perfect for you. If you rotate your arm forward, do the wrinkles on the sleeves improve? But, overall, wrinkles on sleeves aren't the worst thing, as a person does move around a lot outside of photos for the internet Can you describe where the 40 feels big? I am seeing what I think is collar gap on the 40, but it may be due to you holding the phone.

Under the arm. And yeah, definitely a bit of collar gap if it wasn’t sitting just right

Hard to tell if the chest on the 40 is a bit large, again, just hard to tell for me Define sitting just right. If you give the hem a good pull down, and stand there admiring yourself in the mirror, does the collar gap go away? If so, what makes it come back?

Moving around much at all it seemed to come back And thanks again for the thoughts - I’d shown by gf the 38 thinking it was too tight and she thought I was crazy, but I think that’s just because I wear tight clothes more often than not

To me, 38 looks much better from the front than back. Would definitely take both to the tailor for opinions. BTW, are these the "contemporary" cut or the "slim" cut?

Both are contemporary And yeah, the photos really showed me how tight the 38 was across the butt

Hopefull things go well at the tailor's; follow up as needed and show photos! Happy wedding-going. (Do you have a french cuff shirt? I assume that's not it. Studs? Cufflinks? Bowtie? Shoes? Waist covering?)

Don’t have the other stuff yet but I’m planning on it - just want to get this ironed out first.

Can't really see much but the 38 looks a bit short in the front, doesn't it? Both are not really great, but the 38 might work. If they have it you could try a 38L and get that one tailored... Once again I think both are not great as a starting point though. Agree that the armholes on the 40 are too large. It will look suboptimal especially while dancing which I guess you are going to. Good luck!

Yeah on a second look, the 38 is shorter than I thought. We'll see.
