ShellExecuteEx failed: File not found error when trying to run anything in Heroic
Since a short while I am getting the above error trying to run anything through Heroic.
I have tried removing prefixes, redownloading games, redownloading the wine-ge through Heroic. It won't even run winecfg from the game's settings page.
I tried googling and searching here and on github, but I couldn't find anyone with that error, that actually fixed it.

Example log from trying to run Control:

The game launches when using Proton instead of Wine, but then I don't get to use the savegame sync.
Upon further investigation, it might be a Control specific problem. I downloaded some games anew and they do seem to work.

when you switch between wine-ge and proton, the prefix folder structure changes, and thats why your save sync probably fails
since saves are generally stored in the prefix
in any casae this game works perfectly fine for me last time i tried it a couple months ago.. i have a similar setup:
Arch linux, radeon 6700xt, ryzen 5950..
Would be interesting to see your wine-ge logs

Where can I get those?
I set WINEDEBUG to
warn+all
and this is the new log:robust-apricotOP•2y ago

the game options, wrapper options, and game scope should all be removed while we're troubleshooting this, i think some of those are malformed.
prefer system libs should be off, and so should game mode
i don't think you need any of the extra arguments from game options wrapper options or game scope at all
robust-apricotOP•2y ago
Well Heroic's gamescope doesn't work for me, or I don't know how to set it, so I set it through the wrapper. I need it for a windowing issue where the menu looks fine but the game is stretched wide
sunny-green•2y ago
that can probably be fixed later, i think they are malformed
let's get it running
you can cut them and paste them elsewhere for now
robust-apricotOP•2y ago
but let me turn them off just to prove a point 🙂

new log, still not working
sunny-green•2y ago
game scope and environment options are still populated
robust-apricotOP•2y ago
yes, it does that as soon as you open the screen
robust-apricotOP•2y ago
Don't know how to turn it more off than this

sunny-green•2y ago
in the other pages there are more settings
there are some dlls missing, did you delete the prefix after switching from proton to wine? that is recommended
robust-apricotOP•2y ago
Please be more specific than "the other pages". Preferably with a screenshot. I don't see anything related to gamescope in any of the other game settings
I'll delete the prefix for safety and post another log
sunny-green•2y ago
WINE - OTHER - ADVANCED - CLOUD SAVES SYNC are the other pages i mean
robust-apricotOP•2y ago
there's nothing about gamescope in there, so that's not gonna help me clear those settings
sunny-green•2y ago

robust-apricotOP•2y ago
those are all clear, I only added the WINEDEBUG
rebuilding the prefix now
sunny-green•2y ago
yea, remove that
i want to see if the DLL messages are still there after that's off
robust-apricotOP•2y ago
Removed the env var as well now

robust-apricotOP•2y ago
I really wish they'd make that screen resizeable so I wouldn't have to scroll
It's taking an awefully long time to rebuild the prefix
sunny-green•2y ago
that can be normal
robust-apricotOP•2y ago
Well I'll be damned. I stopped it, deleted the prefix again, and now it booted
so now I'll add in one option at a time, see what breaks
That being said, I did run
paru -Syu
this morning, so maybe it was a system lib causing the issue
anyway, it's fixed! Managed to add back in all the options and it's still working. Thanks!sunny-green•2y ago
no worries! glad it's working
