Can't use gamescope

Hi im trying to play Red alert 3: Uprising, but due to an issue with weird artefacts + exclusive full screen - i need to use gamescope. (issue not specific to the game, but to apps using exclusive fullscreen)

i've set the launch options to
gamescope -w 2560 -h 1440 -W 5120 -H 1440 -b -- %command% and the play button just goes back to play when pressed.

i've launched the steam client via the terminal in hopes to gleam some information and only found the following: 

3 Uprising\RA3EP1.exe: /usr/include/vkroots.h:13981: void vkroots::tables::CreateDispatchTable(PFN_vkGetInstanceProcAddr, PFN_GetPhysicalDeviceProcAddr, VkInstance): Assertion `res == VK_SUCCESS' failed.
gamescope: children shut down!
(EE) failed to read Wayland events: Broken pipe
