Outer Worlds really bad FPS and blurry textures
So Epic gave this away for free, though i'd give it a try, but, even on the lowest settings, the game is unplayable, stuttering at around 5 FPS or so (can't see the FPS counter, it won't render), and the textures don't seem to load on any setting, they're just as blurry on low as they're on high which i thought it was weird.
I have an Nvidia 1030 3GB which i know isn't the best for this type of game, but youtube benchmarks seem to suggest i should be able to run this pretty normally on medium.

Here's how it looks on high:

I tried WIne-GE-latest, Proton8, and Proton-GE-8.25, same results every time.
Uploaded the .txt log to this post, it's a bit long.
Is this just my GPU being too bad or something Linux related i can fix?

a few weird issues.. if you dont have feral game mode, you shouldnt turn it on.. if you want to use it you nave to install it.. atm it doesnt look like you have feral game mode.
Similarly despite you having dxvk enabled, i dont see vulkan starting up.
I'd ensure your nvidia drivers and vulkan stuff is all set up properly for your OS.
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
I did install game mode though.
And Steam games work normally, I did all the stuff required to get the drivers working.
I'll double check and write back, but so far, this is the only game with issues.
Ok, a bit of a delay, but i've checked:
For Nvidia card:

So it's set up properly, it's not nouveau.

ambitious-aqua•2y ago
the game uses dx12 right?
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
I think so. Why?
xenial-black•2y ago
Enable vkd3d for x12 and dxvk for x9-11
According to pcgaming wiki it is x11. Also outer worlds is known for not to be polished performance vise.
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Aren't they enabled by defalut in proton? Also, polished performance wise is one thing, having liquified textures on any detail settings is another. Something's weird about this.
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
For instance - this is how it looks on High. There's definitely something wrong here, but i cant' figure out what.

xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Some of the textures, like those rocks are loaded, but everything else looks like the textureless default mesh or something.
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Look at the floor too, the lines look like the gradient is not working or something?

wise-white•2y ago
The remaster (The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition) is d3d12. vkd3d-proton needs dxvk either way so that should also be enabled.
I see in the log both are running though so that is fine.
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Yeah, it's weird... Maybe it's the game, but that youtube video i linked suggests it should run just fine.
I mean, in regards to my hardware at least.
Tried Proton Experimental as well. Still the same.
ambitious-aqua•2y ago
probably a vram and nvidia problem combined
vkd3d-proton on pascal is trash and vkd3d-proton uses a little bit more vram than native d3d12
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Hmm, well if it's either of those, then i guess i'm out of luck. Can't do anything about the Nvidia driver and i don't have another card lol. 😛
ambitious-aqua•2y ago
you can buy a card like the rx 580 if ur interested in buying something, otherwise you are out of luck
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Can't buy anything right now sadly, but yeah... Not the first Nvidia specific issue i've had on linux. When i can, i'm definitely not buying an Nvidia card. This one i "inherited" from another system so that's why i use it, it was better than my R7 260x. Other than that, nothing but problems with it.
I still have Windows on dual boot for Affinity programs, i'll try installing it on Windows to see if it's the game or Nvidia linux drivers.
I marked this as unsolvable as it seems there's nothing i can do with my current hardware.
xenial-black•2y ago
Never haf problems with nvidia cards on linux. Probably reinstall thr nvidia drivers. Make sure system packages are up to date
Can you try wine-ge with dxvk and vkd3d enabled. Also enable use system libraries

Sounds rough
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
I tried all the resolutions, even on 720p it looks like that and low FPS. This is just the instance i took the log from.
I've had nothing BUT problems with Nvidia lol. Wayland is unusable for me, black flickering bars across the screen when gaming, artefacts when resming from sleep lol.
Which one do you have? I heard Pascal chips are getting left in the dirt, and that Nvidia is focusing their drivers on the RTX line of cards.
But everything is up to date, no need to reinstall the driver since it's updating often (Arch, it gets packages often), the kernel is being rebuilt with each update as well.
I did try wine-ge, same thing sadly. Oh well... Win some, lose some i guess. 😛
xenial-black•2y ago
I use only distros based on debian. Pop_os currently. Have a rtx 2060 super
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Ah yes, the driver is supposed to be better on an RTX chip. I guess they're phasing out GTX lol. 😛
xenial-black•2y ago
Could be yes
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Still, it works almost everywhere else so i'm not complaining too much. Prey and this game are about the only ones that didn't work.
xenial-black•2y ago
Maybe some winetricks libs are missing?
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
I checked, and even installed some, nothing seems missing. Besides, i don't know what missing lib could cause textures to not load. This is either a game problem with GPU memory (i only have 3GB, maybe it needs more), or it's some Proton problem with Nvidia maybe, idk...
I deleted the game, i won't be trying anything more. I'll probably just install it on my Windows partition. If it's not working there either, then it's the game or my GPU being too low.
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Well, this is Outer Worlds on Windows. The texture bug is something with the game/GPU it seems, but unlike Linux, i got 60+ FPS on WIndows, so the low FPS was i guess Linux related.

xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Hmm, googling a bit, i can't seem to find what's causing this issue, or how to fix it.
Oh well, i tried...
The game was free. 😛
wise-white•2y ago
Without knowing the specifics in this case here Nvidia usually doesn't fare as well performance wise with vkd3d-proton versus native d3d12 Windows. And Pascal GPUs are usually worse on top.
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Yeah, that was probably the cause of the low FPS, but the texture bug is the game's fault it seems.
Looks just as messed up on Windows as it did on Linux, but with better FPS.
wise-white•2y ago
I don't know the technicals of the Nvidia performance status but i think it's some of their implementation details (driver?) that are less favorable with how vkd3d-proton works compared to something like amd.
Tho for an actual proper answer I'd have to ask the devs
Though things have and are being tried to try and help the issue
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
You mean the game devs or Nvidia driver devs?
wise-white•2y ago
vkd3d-proton devs
deep-jade•2y ago
I used GTX 1050 for years. No hope with Pascal+vkd3d-proton combo
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Ah. But isn't Nvidia the ones that should be implementing vkd3d, not the other way around? 😄 I don't know how this works though...
wise-white•2y ago
Ye but Nvidia in general have some issues in the performance alley. Though yes Pascal is extra bad
deep-jade•2y ago
Nope, NV only does Vulkan driver, not the layer itself
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Yeah, Pascal seems to be abandoned at this point.
wise-white•2y ago
vkd3d-proton translates d3d12 to vulkan which then uses Nvidias driver. vkd3d-proton and dxvk are projects Valve pay for the development of
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
And since Valve use AMD, they don't really have incentive to make sure it works with Nvidia? 😉 😛
deep-jade•2y ago
Nah, they try many things to make NV side works performant as well
wise-white•2y ago
No the dev would very much like nvidia to be just as fast. Nvidia is a fully supported vendor
It's not a simple issue
deep-jade•2y ago
But driver is closed so they don't have too much direct influence or any access to driver itself at source level
So there is no simple identify and fix process
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
I mean, i'm not complaining, it's fine if some things don't work, most of the stuff does, and i'm ok with that.
I know it's not simple, especially since Nvidia is hoarding the drivers and won't open source them.
In the future, when this card stops working at all for what i need it, i'll definitely be buying an AMD.
wise-white•2y ago
No vendor is perfect of course and AMD have it's own issues from time to time. Just to be fair to both sides
And Nvidia devs have helped contribute to vkd3d-proton and dxvk (especially dxvk-nvapi) in the past
deep-jade•2y ago
That is what i did as well ( gone from Optimus laptop to desktop AMD), it is gud.
Ofc no comparable hw, GTX 1050-> 7900 XTX 🐸

xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Well, i used the Ryzen 5 5600g iGPU for a bit before i got this card, it was fine, no issues. Except of course, it's an iGPU, not for gaming, but the stuff it did do, it did well.
I'm not expecting AMD to be perfect, but it beats having to do surgery on the OS just to get the drivers to work in the first place. If nothing else, then for that. lol.
Yup, that's how it's supposed to look. 😄
wise-white•2y ago
Might be interesting to see how the original d3d11 build fares. But i assume you don't have that since this one was free on EGS?
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
I don't have the Original, no. Though, from googling, even on WIndows, it seems to behave better. The remake seems to have problems in general.
So i suppose it would work better on Linux as well.
wise-white•2y ago
@"Leopard" Can you force the new edition in to d3d11 mode with -dx11 ?
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Huh, didn't think of that. I'll see about it. Where do i put the -dx11? In the EGS?
deep-jade•2y ago
Not at pc atm but it seems like a game issue.

At least with defaults
Graphics settings just plain don't work? :: The Outer Worlds: Space...
For whatever reason it seems that the graphics settings in-game do absolutely nothing for me. The game always looks like a blurry horrible mess, with textures so bad you can't tell what they are. No graphics setting seems to change anything at all. Even turning it from Borderless Windowed to Fullscreen doesn't actually work, even after applying ...
wise-white•2y ago
Not that i'd consider it supported since it isn't a ingame option. But sometimes it's possible
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Yup, came across this thread as well.
wise-white•2y ago
I've never used a EGS game so not sure how it works through Heroic
You'll usually want to pass it to the game exe so if Heroic launches that directly then in Heroic
deep-jade•2y ago
Either in Other or Advanced
There is a box that you can pass game args
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Well, i put it in EGS, under launch options. It crashed the game. 😄
deep-jade•2y ago
:CatYeah:
wise-white•2y ago
aw
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
But i'm on WIndows now, i deleted the game from linux.
It's still an issue in Widnows, so i assume it's the game being like that.
Oh well, i guess it's just not working.
A shame, but it was free so...
wise-white•2y ago
ye
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Well, thanks for the help, mystery solved - the game has issues. 😄
And on the Linux side - it's Nvidia/vkd3d causing low FPS, even though, the texture bug is universal across both platforms.
wise-white•2y ago
Sounds plausible
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
I guess i'll go back to playing Mad Max haha. 😛
Thanks again and have a nice day all! 🙂
wise-white•2y ago
You too!
sensitive-blue•2y ago
tbh as far as igpus go, amd's are pretty great, its what powers the steam deck fwiw
i played most of stray on a similar iGPU to the ryzen you mention.. and it was perfectly fine... definitely something to think about in the future ahha
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
Yeah, I was amazed how capable it was. As long as you don't push it past 720p lol.
Which on a 1440p monitor looks badly but hey, it works. 🙂
sensitive-blue•2y ago
i find that with fsr and 1080p resolutions and tiny sacrifices to detail, it does surprsingly well.. definitely not useful for doing modern games at 1440p tho agree there haha
something to put into perspective, the steam deck, xbox series and ps5 all share the same family of CPU/iGPU and similar-ish ram configurations (quad channel), which is similar to the 7000 series stand alone ryzens with iGPUs.. (sans quad channel, just dual channel here), and the 7000 series has better CPU cores.
Generally setting games to similar visual detail levels to consoles on these kinds of iGPUs nets a similar kind of performance
xenial-blackOP•2y ago
It's not even that i was trying to game at 1440p, but i have a 1440p 32" monitor, and stretching that 720p to the monitor area looks blurry. 😛
If i had some smaller monitor, like a laptop, or indeed Steam deck's screen, a Ryzen iGPU would be really all i need. Definitely very interesting pieces of hardware those AMD iGPUs. I was shocked at what i was able to play on it, just a few years ago, gaming on an iGPU would have been unthinkable. 🙂
sensitive-blue•2y ago
yeah its really wild how far thats come
