Let down several times: Portuguese flannel and Universal Works.
Former often nice fabric but I find the fit weird and have had a couple shrink like fuck on first (cold) wash. Latter often poor fabric and really weird fit.
Thankfully both widely available cheap secondhand for trying out.
Oh yeah ? I’m about to buy my first secondhand Portuguese Flannel
I love my 3sixteen crosscut flannel, wearing it RN. Unique fabric (mine is the alabaster jacquard). No issues with the fit aside from the sleeves being long. The fit is pretty true to size so I wouldn't size down.
Buttons are cool too lol
Portuguese Flannel quality is a bit inconsistent these days but occasionally they nail it. Sizing can be a bit inconsistent. Also been let down by Corridor. Great fabrics, insanely weird cut.
Probably my most expensive piece is a Casablanca shirt and I was pretty disappointed by the weird shoulders on that puppy
My KPC Meta shirt is my favourite, but I also like thrifting and finding vintage ones a lot, because it really lets you still have a voice even in a pretty breezy situation
Like I got this shirt a few years ago and a few friends have told me it's their favourite in my collection
I'm still a sucker for flannel shirts. Favourite I have is this Studio D'artisan mud dyed one, the fit is good and it's a nice heavy weight
obviously a case of "thing, japan"
I adore Folk shirts, great price (~$50) secondhand and they do fun details. Standouts for me are a chambray shirt with elbow patches and a plain woven(?) With button snaps on the sleeves. Last couple seasons have been more basic but still good.
i’ve not had issues fwiw
Dries van noten has the best summer shirts in the biz
Also im wearing my brycelands denim pearlsnap constantly its fantastic
I'm also a fan of looking for secondhand pendleton shirts although it can be a bit of a crapshoot on sizing because people will have inevitably machine washed it and the sleeves are many inches shorter than they should be
Wythe is easily my favorite brand for casual shirts. But that's mainly because I have some sort of sickness for pearl snap shirts. Most of my fits feature a Wythe pearl snap
I really want to get my hands on one. I already have denim westerns in a medium and dark wash but the brycelands ones just seem to hit different
wrangler western shirts
Wranglers are great! I also have one from Gap that's v nice
love their collab shirts. got one from the alfie kungu one a while back and still looking one for my size cause i sized down since they were sold out.
back in the day would've said gitman vintage but also looking back all the shirts fit horribly on me. still do, wore one the other day and it was just like, damn i wish these few changes were made and itll be A+ and unfortunately feel that way for each one i have from them.
rn really loving Harago and Story mfg shirts. Harago seems like a caual shirt specific company so there's so many to choose from.
Our legacy also has some bangers every now and then.
High price point for me is 4S Designs and Acne Studios. Crazy textiles or cuts depending on the brand, lotta cool options imo. Lemaire has some cool stuff as well. Pretty much any designer brand whose designs speak to you will fit here imo.
Corridor is medium priced for more of a MFA core shirt, though their shirts are cut weird.
Love lotta streetwear shirts, brands like Wacko Maria (who else puts an ICBM launch photo on a shirt), Supreme, ALD, Braindead, Pleasures, Stussy. Lot of variety and options in the streetwear space tbh, and it can be decently cheap. This is probably my current favorite space for random shirts.
Idk why but i agree!
Im trying to do limited cops this year but one thing on my list for sure is the same thing in black denim
+1 on Corridor shirts being cut weird. Also the fabric doesn't seem the most durable just from handling it. Never tried Portguese Flannel, liked some shirts but nothing really made me want to out of my way to get anything.
Also agreed on the streetwear shirts. Lot of fun things going on. Only gripe with a lot of brands though is the big use of viscose. Just doesn't seem like they'll last a long time. Only viscose shirt I have that I feel like would last me a while is from Schnaydermans and they closed down I think so rip.
Brands I really want to get my hands on is Tony Shirtmakers and Baema.t.boa
IMO vicose is a better summer fabric than cotton, but the downside is cleaning it. It definetly makes it annoying to clean (handwash or dry cleaning required a lot) but its not that weak imo.
It just seems to pill easier than other fabrics in my experience. And it's mostly anecdotal but it just doesn't feel like it'll last a while compared to cotton, linen, or silk. Like I wouldn't imagine any of my viscose shirts getting to that vintage stage.
Also seems to bleed more often than other shirts, but that's also ancedotal and depends from brand to brand
Oh ya, also SFC has cool vintage inspired stuff
I only have one shirt from them but I really like this Wood Wood camp collar. It has a satisfying viscose (or maybe tencel?) drape.
1) Tie-dye tees. 2) I keep an eye out on eBay for shirts by Haupt, which are very nice quality and have some fun patterns. 3) OCBDs are pretty casual in my opinion, so I'm going to include those as well.
Other favorites are Brooks Brothers Black Fleece, I think only available secondhand now, and Eleventy, which runs slim.
Seller won't go under $36 dammit. I should probably just pay it.
Brands that have let me down: J. Crew long sleeves don't fit me. The sleeves are too long, which is a clever way of saying I'm too fat.
I have this shirt and it’s my fav shirt if it wasn’t 2 sizes too small for me
That's disappointing, Mine is almost oversized for me, to the point that I like to roll the sleeves up. Do you ever try it open over a tank?
I try to make it work haha
Yeah I only have one gbv shirt and I was really not impressed, cut was ok for a slim fit but the fabric was mall tier
I know they make a lot of stuff and not all of it is equal
for casual shirts i like all saints, vince, john varvatos, ted baker, theory. if im going for expensive, probably zegna or brunello. sunglasses i tend to always drop or scratch them so i never go too expensive and i stick to ray bans, oliver peoples, and persol. personally i look for lightweight, polarized, and nothing too flashy - just a relatively simple frame with dark lenses.
Yeah its a real mix with gbv fabric-wise. Fit is just bad across the board though.
my favorite casual shirts are from jacquemus, evan kinori, and our legacy. i stick to rayon living in LA and rarely purchase anything in a thicker fabric
I own a few vintage rayon aloha shirts that I like quite a lot. Many quality reproductions available as well from brands like Sun Surf and Dry Bones. The Vintage Aloha Shirts books have some great photos if you're a particular fan of them.
:/ Unfortunate that the window where wearing them feels appropriate is brief in Massachusetts.
I recently picked up this open collar shirt from Beams Plus, haven’t seen them mentioned but I’m a big fan. The print is muted in color but detailed enough to be interesting, looking forward to wearing it when the weather is warm enough again.
+1 for Wythe. I have their denim pearl snap and it’s one of my favorite things to wear. Would love to try Bryceland’s sawtooth westerner to compare. In the spirit of “thing, Japan.” I love UES shirts, particularly their flannels. I’ve found their fit to be better for me than Iron Heart because of the shorter sleeve and body lengths and they’re about half the price.
Beams is solid
I've got a handful of rayon shirts from wacko maria and I can't wear them as often as I'd like because of the dry clean only. how are all of you faring with the rayon?
basically the problem with modals summorized. Vicose, Rayon, Lyocell, Cupro are all basically the same, with the plus being they are lightweight and breathable and the downside being they are a pain to clean and take care of
I dont want to hand this to some old dude to clean, eggheads to need develop home dry cleaning
Vintage patagonia for sure. I have a cord and a denim one that I wear all the time. Vintage Nike ACG too, that one’s a DWR zip-off for the winter months. My summer go to is the earthworm shirt from Cactus Store LA. Honorable mentions go to the Engineered Garments flannel and Randy’s Garments mesh work shirt. I’ve been thinking hard about Tender Co and am waiting for a Story MFG greetings shirt to pop up at a good price.
Honestly might be fine with a ph balanced no rinse wash and a color catcher in the bucket for safe measure. towel dry then hang to dry
might try it with one of them with only 2 colors as an experiment, malingering over going to the dry cleaners ruins a lot of the magic of wearing the shirts.
Rip Deveaux
^sick shirts. Reminds me of another favorite shirt, this sakura print from Blue Blue Japan. I think their rayon shirts are exceptional for summer.
Baema.t.boa rips
if the colors don't run and its 100% rayon it will probably survive. I also always wear a mesh undershirt with basically all my dry clean shirts to reduce how often they need to be cleaned.
Trying to get into this a bit more, I'm a big fan of the adjacent bowling shirt brand Nat Nast
bummer its all such a limited run and something the size doesnt match up
Tender is so nice, I tried on one of their shirts a while back. Unfortunately it was $700
But the details and fit were insane
I bought a wrangler denim shirt and it ended up being like suuuuper long - did I get the wrong one? Or does everyone just tuck those in?
Cowboy cut?
Probably made to not come untucked while doing work
Westerns are meant to be worn tucked-in. It’s long by design
I’m just a fool
That’s so dope
Prada bowling shirts. I mean, I don’t own any, but they’re my favorite.
For serious tho, vintage bowling shirts are awesome. The chain stitched names on the chest, the lettering on the back of the local sponsor or team name and the wild colors. So good. So much character. They pull some high prices on etsy and ebay tho
I was eying those but decided they were too expensive. Great color and very tasteful example of that pattern.
That’s pretty cool.
