dns proxy region

context: i was adding a sub domain and noticed that requests took around 500ms using proxied dns compared to 20ms when using a proxy status of dns only. visiting domain/cdn-cgi/trace showed a colo somewhere in the us. My origin is located in Nürnberg (Hetzner) and i'm located in germany aswell. Does anyone know why or how this can happen?

There's been a bunch of posts recently about them re-routing those connections through the US. The traceroute I saw before showed DTAG as the last hop in the US, mentioning it's more on their end then CF. There's a post here that covered it pretty well: https://community.cloudflare.com/t/our-server-in-frankfurt-germany-eu-is-being-proxied-from-the-newark-nj-us-datacenter/610483/8?u=chaika tldr being something like Paid plan might fix it/route closer, underlying cause is more then DTAG wants CF to pay for traffic, nothing specific you can do about it otherwise well, you could VPN to a server somewhere in the EU which isn't reliant in dtag/may have better routes, another option
