printer Smoking βΉ
Hei there
I finished building a ratrig vcpre 3 500.
Now i am at installing it.
I did flash Rat OS to sd card of raspberry pi and turned on the printer to be able to connect to RatOS.
No sd card in Octopus v1.1 as of now!
While i was setzing up the wifi the printer started to smoke like crazy.
The hotend heater just heated like crazy without stopping! π³
What am i doing wrong??
I checked the wiering and it seems to be correct.

I did connect hotend heater at the blue (looks like it is connected to far up on picture but it is connected to the first ro from bottom!)
Hotend thermistor is connecte above bed thermistor! I use Octopus v1.1
Also when i turned on the partcooling fan did run but the hotend cooling fan did not! I use Noctua 40x10 5V for Hotend which is connected to the 2. lowest of fan plugs with only + & - . And I use 40x20 12V Noctua fan for Part cooling which is connected + & - on very top fan plug and pwm at the lowest fan plug. Might that be the problem π€π€π€ normaly not? The heater should not heat like that at all i guess??
Oh did i mabey go wrong on powering printer on at this early point? Before any configuration is done?? Do i need to power only the raspberry alone at first?
You need to edit your printer.cfg first
Ok thanks ππ€πΌ
I mean I'd leave all heaters disconnected until you have the printer fully set up and your thermistors are reading properly before hand.
Because editing your printer config file comes after setting up RatOS and you are on the mainsail web portal looking at the printers dashboard. So having steppers, heaters and fans hooked up can cause issue's if there is no firmware on the MCU because there is nothing there telling what pins to do what. It will cause runaway's
ah ok i got it π
thanks a lot!
is it enough to only disconnect hotend heater and bed relay cable?
( i dont want to label every wire and reconnect them later if i dont have to :/ )
also i have seen some pictures of guys that have installed jumpers at 2 blue locations
one in the middle of the board where only 2 pins are and one on the upper right at the very top 2 pins
do i need them ? what are they good for? i sadly couldnt find anything in manual or when online searching :/
Upper right is a voltage select for the sensor plug J40
From the manual: proximity sensor input can individually have the voltage supplied by their pin header selected by configuring the jumpers associated with each header.
Bottom is so you can power the board from USB-C
The Octopus can be powered using the USB-C port by insertingthejumperasshown below. This can make it easier to compile and downloadfirmwaredirectly to the motherboard using DFU mode.
If you do not connect this jumper then you must provide the board with power via the main input supply if you would like to communicate via USB-C.
The build guide goes step by step what to hookup and where.
Ahhh awsm! Thanks a lot π
i did setup pi and firmware for board now
i also did all my settings according to my used hardware in printer.config file
but somehow moonracker is not abel to do update :/
also i do get a ADC error and dont know why?
Load of MCU shows really high temperature
is that why?
what can i do about it?
thank you so much for your help!
You're just updating the software. Did you setup the printer.cfg file?
yes i did go through printer.cfg and do all # the way they need to π
i tried some things including swapping to different thermistors for hotend...
but nothing worked π¦
I guess the problem is because of the high temp reading of the octpus mcu? is it?
it says +155Β°C which i guess is way to high?
when touching the stm32 on the octopus board it is definately not hot! just a liiitle bit warmish ( i guess 25Β°C definately not over 30Β°C!)
max temp in octopus v1.1 config shows 100Β°C as limit
You get this error when your thermistor isn't attached or it is defined as the wrong type
what type of thermistor do you have?
Problem is i dont know βΉοΈ
Bed Tehermistor i am very sure its original from ratrig
Id guess hotend 2
Could it not be because of the mcu temp?
Quite sure i have those 2 π
hmm i also thinking of just changing max allowed temp for mcu to 170
but i cant even change anything in the octopus1.1 config file
I added override to set max temp for mcu to 170Β°C
seams like it is the problem
other 2 thermistors showing right values
then after 1-2 min this error ://
i did order new octopus 1.1 on amazon now which will arrive tomorrow :))
You should only edit printer.cfg. If you need to edit something else, stop, because you are probably doing something wrong
yeah, that is not normal that it is saying it is that hot
this is the thermistor for your hotend
yes it is
ok got it π
so getting a new board at this point is the right decission probaply?
got the new board installed
did the whole installation process from beginig
now i can not get it to detect my board π¦
did everything as explained multiple times ://
im reeeaaally gooingg crazy here slowly but surely :(((
i dont know what to do anymore :/
maybe Youtube can help you
have you set the jumpers correctly?
i think yes
let's start here. Did you use SD card or DFU to flash the board?
Junpers for fans
Jumpers for motors
I only have conected usb to pi and power now
if i remember you need a jumper near USB
only if powering it over USB
Sd card as duf wont show up
i also tried using other 32gb sd card freshly formated to fat32
also doesnt work :/
looks like you have the jumper on the boot0?
circled in purple
that should not be there
circled in red - see how the diagram says there should be no jumper here?
Sadly only looked like it on photo πβΉοΈ
ok
how long are you waiting after putting in the SD card and powering the octopus?
Hmmm what about this one thoo? π€π€
I dont have installed
As its nood green
But it is shown on pickture
there is no green box over it, so there should be no jumper there
this is just a stock photo
Ok βΉοΈβΉοΈβΉοΈ
just to confirm, you are powering down the octopus, putting in the SD card, powering it back up, waiting 1 minute, powering it down, removing SD card (check file has changed to firmware.CUR) and then powering it back up and continuing with the configurator?
I will do it as precissely like that as i can again
I didnt take it out and look for firmware.cur till now
if it doesn't change to firmware.cur, that would indicate it didn't actually flash and we can narrow down why
Ok
Awsm thanks a lot sofar! π
it indeed still shows firmware.bin :/
right, so it didn't flash. Make sure you have in windows explorer the file extension showing. You could be naming it incorrectly because of that
its in german but it is on
how did you format the SD card? How big is the SD card?
i hit right click on the accoring drive and hit format
then selected fat 32 and hit start
it is a 32gb micro sd
do you have any smaller than 32 GB?
yes i will now try again with a small sd card 128mb
make sure to format it as FAT first
not as fat 32? but as fat?
If FAT32 is all you got, then that's fine.
no i can also select fat
Try just FAT then
yep i will do that π
did cut conection via right click now at first on explorer
then waited 30 sek
pulled out sd
board and pi are now off power
will insert sd card
wait 30 sek
and power both on
i did let it run for over 5 min but cant even acces ratos.local/config/step1 now anymore ://
i will now start again from beginning with new file on pi
then if still doesnt work i will try another pi
are your PI and octopus on the same power supply?
no
have a original raspberry powercable for the pi
did you turn the PI off? I don't understand why it would all of a sudden not work anymore
the PI is attached to the internet?
yes i turned it off and back on again with the board together
i think so
i did configure wifi in step before
no need if it is on a different power supply
check to see if it started it's own wifi. Maybe it has a bad connection to the wifi
there is no rasspberry on wifi searching but signal on the wifi i did conect the pi 2 is indeed bad :;/
it might be easier to use DFU to flash. Turn the octopus off, add a jumper to the boot0 header, turn the power back on, and go through the configurator and select DFU flash option
a pi 2?! yeah, you might want to upgrade to a PI 3 or 4
it s a pi 3 model b+
should be fine?
ok yeah that should be fine
if you open your phone and look for wifi networks do you see any labeled ratos?
nope no rat os
ok. For this can you plug it into a ethernet cord instead of using wifi?
yes i can
but isnt it allready connected to the wifi now ?
you said you can't connect to it?
i try setting up pi from beginning now :))) π¦
ok, you didn't need to do that...
to late π¦ :)) already flashing the sd card new with balena etcher
ok. well I will be busy with the family in a bit, but once you get back to the point where you are trying to flash the octopus, add the jumper to boot0 header, turn the octopus on, and then continue with the configurator and use the DFU option
ok sure thing!
thanks so much for the help and have a nice time with fam! π
good luck! If you run into more issues, I'm sure someone here will pick up where I left off
yeah awsm! thanks
so i now connected the old octopus board again
flashing worked on that board first try
so i now hope that i will not again get the 150Β°C wrong mcu temp with that board
seams like the new one i got is even more damged?
man i m really starting to hatre this bullshit and getting frustrated now after putting 5-6 hours per day in for the 5th day now and getting to nowhere :((((
i now get this mcu is outdatet message :(((
omg
but i can not go back to the config step 1 where i can duf the board?
you can go back and re flash through ratos
how? :/
Type your printer ip adress/configure
Like 192.168.x.x/configure
And you can see the ratos configuration wizard once again
Oh awsm thanks π
Try and give me feedback
If u can see the ratos wizard
Yep
I will try now
Now for me is night, i must go tΓ² bed and sleeping...
Same here in germany
But if u are in trouble writer here
1 am
In Italy too
Looks like the solution to the problem πππΌ thanks and good night π
Yep that worked πππΌ
Yeeeeeeessss
But now i am exactly at that point yet AGAIN π©π©π©
Now you can flash automatically
Ok have you connected the thermistor?
It s the temp of the stm32 mcu on the mainboard
Oh God, isnt fixed
I have one board bought with the orinter that gives wrong mcu temp and 1 new arrived today that is not possible to flash now π€¬π€¬π€¬
FUCK BIGTREETECH π€ππΌππΌππΌ
Tomorrow morning i Will give a try
Maybe on reddit or Google we can find the solutions for these boards
I guess i need to order jet a 3. octopus v1.1 π€π€·πΌββοΈ
I have this type of problems with their toolboards
Thanks so much β€οΈβπ₯
Dont worry, there is Always a solution πͺ
Its just so frustrating ππ drives me crazy βΉοΈ tried to get it running for 8 hours on saturday 4 hours on Sunday and 6 hours each today and yesterday now πππβΉοΈ
Sure thing
Uhm Just for info, have you try others USB cables?
Or others Raspberry USB ports of course
Yes i did try both πππΌ
I ordered a 3. octopus v1.1 on amazon now ππππ€·πΌββοΈ
I can send them back so π€·πΌββοΈπ€·πΌββοΈπ€·πΌββοΈπ€·πΌββοΈ
But sadly doesnt quite sure not arrive tomorrow but only on 07.03.
Why did you connect your old broken board?
Because i want to test if it would work to flash π
did you try flashing using DFU on the second board?
Yes
But didnt work
afterwards, did you remove the boot0 jumper and restart the octopus?
With 1st board flashing works via sd and dfu
there is a small error in the instructions
Yes
Which is? π
when to remove the boot0 jumper
it will tell you to continue, and will say it failed. But that is because the boot0 jumper is still on
I would try that second board again and see now that the boot0 jumper is off that the configurator detects it
i allready tried that
didnt work
but 1 hour ago board no 3 arrived :)))
i will try that next few hours π
hei
i did try it agai ntoday
new board
number 3
sadly same issue as with board no 1 ://
searched like hole internett twice :))
but cant find a thing :/
what am i missing? :/
should not be a problem in my wires as the temp of mcu is a internal board thing? am i right?
Maybe the iso of Os for Raspberry?
32 or 64bit?
only use the 32bit
This shows the pi temp at 40β°. You probably haven't attached the hotend or bed thermistor which is why you're getting that error
I have to agree this might be a thermistor error.
Hit print screen right as the dashboard loads so you can see what is the cause of the issue. Or write in the overide section of your config to allow -300 or something to figure it out... But be sure to remove them before running the printer.
you can temporarily set the min and max temperatures to get the dashboard up, but i agree to attach the thermistors for bed and hotend. (also if you do this make darn certain to remove the temporary changes of -300 etc
He have a High temp on the MCU!
Take a look, 170 degrees for the octopus
that is likely wrong, unless the MCU is smoking.
i mean i see the graphic for it, if that is the question.
Yes!!
I also think thats the problem and not the bed or hotend thermistor π
Im also sure that this is wrong! mcu on octopus board isnt even warm if i touch it
the MCU will throw errors if you dont have a temp probe attached to the hotend and heated bed pins, this is a safety feature to ensure you do not have thermal runaway/fire. essentially once you attach those, it should start enough to see whats going on (if anything is)
ADC is a type of pin essentially: https://www.klipper3d.org/FAQ.html#do-i-have-to-wire-my-device-to-a-specific-type-of-micro-controller-pin
But thermistors are attached π
I will check wiering again
Are you using rapido?
With pt1000 hotend?
No im using mosquito magnum
The system load photo you last attached literally shows the board temp as 40β° though?
Its pi temp 40 and mcu temp 170?
Isnt it?
what you purchased wasnt a PT1000 - did you add one in after the fact? - sorry realized that was someone elses statement. (ts 6am i should go to bed)
thats the host, mcu is wacko but i dont trust it till its "running"
Just to be sure. Try adding this to your user overrides section
just make sure to remove it before you start printing.
