i recovered so im not sure the crash data is there. once i got the system back up and booting i just deleted the mod folder i created please bear with me, im cutting my baby teeth with this particular OS

stormy-gold•2y ago
seems like you need vcrun2019 from wintricks probably will need dotnet35 and/or dotnet472 try each one one at a time, run the game, see if it works
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
just for clarity toast, he's trying to get a mod working, afaik the game works fine vanilla
stormy-gold
stormy-gold•2y ago
oops, yeah my bad. is that in the message in gaming?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
yes
stormy-gold
stormy-gold•2y ago
i didn't bother reading it since.. ya know. i figured he'd put all the info here
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
when i installed the game using your app i DID notice it installed dotnet 3.5 and 4.0 i also think i saw a bunch of other windows libs
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
yeah if you have the automatic dependencies feature turned on that should pull that stuff in, and gog games now also install the dependencies listed by the manifest so you should be pretty good to go there, the hitch is on your mod.. where did you place the mod folder? (full linux path is probably the right one to show) maybe a link to the mod's install instructions too?

xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
home/documents/larian studios/divinity original sin 2 definitive edition/ i created the Mods folder there it loads the mods from there just fine, the game runs just fine, the only problem is, that once i quit and shut down, then reboot, it seems to lose its boot sequence or something, it just wont boot normally the mods even show up in the game itself when you go to enable them as well the problem seems to only be rebooting after a shutdown when i dont have that mod folder, the system works just fine after a reboot so i was wondering if there was some kind of conflict between the two OS i mean i create the new folder using mint so not sure if that somehow conflicts with what it thinks is windows i doubt it though unless its setting some kind of toggle for what kind of folder it is and since the game is running in "windows" it might not recognize the linux folder, dunno im a linux noob its weird that the game works just fine with the mods, its only after a reboot that the probs start, it hangs on reboot The Cheat Commander for the Definitive Edition of the game. Unzip into "Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition\Mods". you have to create the mods folder manually thats just one of the mods but the rest are the same
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
it doesnt, so long as everything is on a linux partition (not ntfs or fat32 or exfat) it should be fine. Wine handles all the windows file system calls
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
k i figured as much
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
to be clear the game is running on linux, and wine is translating windows calls into linux ones
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
my system os is linux yes and i presume the program is doing the windows calls
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
when yo usay reboot what do you mean restart the game? restart the computer
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
no restart computer
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
(reboot usually means reastart the computer) so you reboot, then start the game and with mods in the mod folder it doesnt work? is the log above from that attempt?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
i was playing happily yesterday then shut down the system to go to bed, went to play some more and......
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
what mod? can you link it
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
i installed several mods
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
ok.. so do you have a list of what those are? and their install instructions have you tried having just one at a time installed to see if its a particular mod misbehaving?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
like i said, they ALL worked just fine, until i shut down and rebooted the next day
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
exactly.... so did you try each one individually to see if restarting broke them?

graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
personally i'd try one at a time to see if its actually a particular mod that is causing the problem
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
Odinblade's Hydrosophist Class Overhaul-2-1-3-2-1677317982 and have to possibly recover mulitple times over and over again?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
recover?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
once i shut down, the next time i boot it hangs, THAT is the problem the mods themselves work just fine until i rebppt
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
right and if you remove the mods in the mods folder does it work fine?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
reboot i removed it all including the folder because i got tired of fighting with it
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
by all what do you mean, you uinstall the whole game?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
no, i wiped the whole folder, it no longer exists mods and all
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
whole which folder? mods folder? the game too?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
the game itself is still there
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
or just the mods folder ok so if you try one at a time, and it continues to work, i dont think you have to wipe the whole mods folder just the last mod that you added and if it works, you add another mod, and so on it really sounds like it could potentially be just one mod messing things up
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
yes yes i know how that works
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
similarly do any of these mods have known conflicts with the other mods you are using? sometimes you cant just mix and match mods
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
none that i'm aware of yes i know, all the odin ones are made by the same guy, thats WHY there is a mod called odinblade extension the others are pretty much just stand alones they all kinda do different things
wise-white
wise-white•2y ago
if you encounter the crash, send the new log here, maybe there will be some hints as to why it crashes
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
sigh ok i really dont feel like rebooting my computer 17 times in a row but whatever
wise-white
wise-white•2y ago
oh, don't try to reproduce it, I mean if you find it by accident
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
the thing is, ive been fighting this thing for two days now, im almost temped to go back to win 7
wise-white
wise-white•2y ago
is it really up to the reboots?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
as far as i can tell
wise-white
wise-white•2y ago
wine shouldn't be affected in any way by rebooting
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
like i said, the game runs PERFECT, until i reboot
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
logs would really help if you have them from a failed run
wise-white
wise-white•2y ago
how exactly are you setting up those mods, like in what location they are etc.. and how do you run the game with mods enabled
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
and im getting tired of trying to recover my system
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
when you say "recover my system" you mean just deleting the mods folder right?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
you put the files in the mod folder, you run the game, the main menu has a mods button, you push that, it lists all available mods in the mod folder, you check off the ones you want on and then hit okay no, when i say recover, i mean recover from a failed boot up that just crashes
wise-white
wise-white•2y ago
got it, so it's just natively supported by the game
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
wait so your compute rdoesnt reboot? i thought you meant the game doesnt restart? this sounds unrelated to the game or its mods
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
no, the SYSTEM wont reboot unless i put the install disk back in, i had to REINSTALL the OS the last time and i'm getting tired of doing that
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
sounds like you have some other problem
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
no it works just fine the game runs just fine, until i try to put in mods then its a crap show
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
so without putting mods in does your system reboot?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
yes ive rebooted my system several times just to make sure
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
fwiw there's no /home/documents folder unless that is your user name can you show a screen shot of where you put mods
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
well the one above home is my name no
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
that doesnt sound right.. can you show a screen shot of that folder
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
ive told you where they got put you want the whole friggin path?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
thats not right.. linux home directory structure usually looks something like this: /home/<username> yes the whole entire path
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
i dunno, its not like windows where it shows you the path
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
it very much shows the entire path just open a terminal type pwd and screen shot it
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
/home/myname
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
it shouldnt be long.. usually something like /home/userName/Documents/path/to/mod you likely want to put the mods in the documents folder in /home/jim/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/Divinity Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition/drive_c/ (copy pasted from your logs) should look like a windows file structure after there.. so like users/yourUser/Documents or something similar
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
so create the mos folder there? mods+
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
in the document folder of the user in that directory yes.. hopefully you should see it there
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
oh i see create the mods folder there?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
yeah you make a lirain folder and all that the instructions noted right?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
huh?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
There's a good chance this folder is symlinked to your normal documents folder, but just wanted to be sure the path was correct
Unzip into "Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition\Mods".
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
ive got jim/games/heroic/prefixes/default/divninty/drivec/users/jim/docs/larian/divinity/then add mods here? well mod folder that is its not gonna freak out if i create a mods folder is it? oh well guess i will give it a shot looks like it should work..... i'll let ya know how it turns out, but if im not back in an hour or so it prob failed as well
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
shouldnt
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
i hope not
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
yeah if it still breaks thats truely bizzare because it absolutely shouldnt cause any issues like that reboot problem
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
k gonna run the game reboot and see if it will reboot
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
i fyou get error on reboot can you take a pic of the error ?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
ill try
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
might have to use phone
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
not sure what the command is for linux
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
oh i jus tmean take an actual picture the error will likely be in a place wher eyou cant screen shot it
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
well so far so good, the mods show in the mod section and i was able to create a charcter, so now on to launching the play k now i will shut down the game and reboot the system and see what happens, but i think this may have solved it
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
kk
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
thank you VERY MUCH, it looks like it did the trick reboots with no issues well im learning even if it's the hard way
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
still concerning something in your documents folder broke the system.. it could be possible you maybe placed it in a system directory?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
so now i know the program has a specific windows directory
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
well yes and no 😄 in a lot of cases heroic actually symlinks to your normal user documents folder
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
yeah i think so thats why i was wondering about folders initially, i didnt realize it made others i didnt dig deep enough into the file directory plus it doesnt help that im a total noob when it comes to linux
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
just to be clear: a symlinked folder is basically a short cut in one place that connects you to the linked folder in a different place a short cut (ish) in windows terms (technically windows has symlinks too, but doesnt expose them to the gui )
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
so it connects the linux system to a "windows" system ?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
not exactly its just a way to link two folders together to be "the same thing"
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
hmm
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
if you imagine your documents folder as a bucket that holds a bunch of stuff.. a symlink is sort of a pointer to the same bucket of stuff from somewhere else
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
so single repository with multiple links?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
like if you were to look in your documents folder in your normal home directory, do you see the mod folder you made?
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
no cause i deleted it so same folder just in two physical places?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
more or less yeah
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
but the pathing is the fly in the ointment
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
there are different types of symlinking but for simplicity's sake close enough x_x
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
i mean its essentiall running two diff os's
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
well you arent really running a second os
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
or compatibility mode well windows is being emulated in some way
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
windows and linux programs for x86 hardware all run on the same cpu so they've all been built for that microarchitecture. wine simply takes advantage of that.. when a program calls out to windows APIs, it returns a reply using linux APIs to get the result wine == Wine Is Not an Emulator fwiw
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
its running within a windows bubble that resides in a linux os? well virtual machine whatever you want to call it
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
its not a vm either its simply a translation layer
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
hmm so a language interpreter its funny, back in the day, people used to code in assembly language, try learning that one if you dare
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
i mean i was a computer engineering major and write video games for aliving haha so yeah i have written assembly and programmed hardware like little micro controllers
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
oh cool
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
i've also designed circuits and electronics
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
not at all like the text based programing languages like C or something
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
nodnod granted imo its mostly tedious.. x_x
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
which one? just coding in general ?
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
assembly
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
oh yeah, you got to know your stuff
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
turns out too compilers tend to write better assembly anyway haha
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
its a real pain, but its really powerful and tight
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
if you are sitting around micro optimizing assembly.. you either have gone down a really ridiculous path, or have some very specific need ime ahha
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
well i think coders today are just sort of lazy and tend to write sloppy code because they can
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
yes and no certainly in some fields for sure haha
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
not all of course
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
you cant really afford it in games but there are so many really chonky websites out there haha
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
yeah, it seems to me that game producers are only interested in getting anything that works out the door so they can reap the cash cow not like it used to be i mean of course a compay wants to make money, but at least have some pride in what you make
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
turns out big conglomerates are bad for gaming imo case in point, they've laid off 18000 industry workers
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
yeah they tend to be more of a problem than a help
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
in the last year, over 9000 of which in the last couple months
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
its because they all want to monopolize and drive out any competition they dont want any
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
lots of those were in the name of improving the bottom line for quarterly/yearly reasons
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
competition is what keeps prices down yeah they have all kinds of excuses the inflation doesnt help either
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
well in this case its greed of the execs and their moves to make shareholders happy instead of making a good product and keep the commpany sustainable so they dont have to fire everyone
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
its greed on pretty much all levels
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
but the priority isnt actually the games, its the shareholders heh
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
true
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
yeah
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
it used to be the mindset was, build a good product at a good price and then use a decent amount of your profit into improving your product, doesnt seem like that anymore
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
yeah games isnt the only industry this has happened too its just.. ugh haha
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
yeah i know
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
i just want to make games and be able to afford to live x_x
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
ive been around a while lol well good luck on that make a good game and go solo
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
its panned out for 16 years somehow so doing ok haha
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
gotta know your market though
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
well sort of what im doing, we separated from our corporate owner and went indie cuz of the condition of the industry so hoping that pans out haha
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
good luck what ive notice is a lot of game makers make a game that THEY want to play, which is fine, but you cant leave out what everyone else wants to play and expect to make money feed the masses first then if you make a lot of money, then make what YOU want
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
its all relative right, the amount you have to make from a game to be sustainable as one or a few people is very different than what a AAA has to make to be sustainable
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
although its nice if you can do both at the same time true overhead is a killer
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
the bar is certainly lower the smaller you are in order to be a success
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
the bar may be smaller, but the sky is the limit as long as you are willing
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
i mean truthfully its a bit of a timing and luck game too
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
well yeah, might as well toss in marketing too because thats a big factor
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
a friend of mine (the dev behind Banished) lucked out, the new simcity failed miserably, and his game launched right in the same window and got attention of major media outlets as "a good alternate" and well he was just one guy making a game, and hit it big.. which amazing really haha
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
oh yeah, i bought that game
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
its pretty great
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
yeah but not sure i can get it back because i wiped my hd
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
it was just him and some msuic content from his brother i think behind it, so all that profit was his haha very in the right place at the right time
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
thats what i mean, just one guy, there was a guy named josh parnell who was building a space game but he burnt out or something yeah luck is definately a factor
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
is it that one where you could go from planet surface to space and stuff? i forget the name
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
he kept changing things in the game
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
making gmes is pretty hard tbh
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
uh, maybe, i forget the name now too oh limit theory i think his forum is still up but the game is toast
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
that sucks
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
not sure what he's doing now, prob working for someone else this was back in like 2014 or there abouts
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
nodnod seems the right time frame
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
the whole covid stupidity thing hasnt helped although coding at home is just as good
graceful-beige
graceful-beige•2y ago
we can probalby move to off topic at this rate ahah you are all good on this one right x_x
broad-brown
broad-brown•2y ago
Now I know why there are so many messages attached to this post. 😛
xenophobic-harlequin
xenophobic-harlequinOP•2y ago
i think so and thanks again for the help
