Way to display a pop over on new DB notification?

Was wondering what the best way to go about having database notifications display a popover (like the normal notifications) when a new one is retrieved via pulling. Was wondering if anyone has done this. A hacky way I was thinking is catching one of the events, checking and actually adding a normal notification there.
