Motherboard for a Home Server
Hey guys! I am building my own home server and wanted to know which motherboard you would recommend. Ram will be DDR4 and CPU I am still between an R9 or R7. Any tips would be appreciated

Also, not that overpriced, but still great
B450/B550. If it’s a home lab you won’t need things like IPMI however I would stand by something that is definitely air cooled with a tower cooler, then plenty of positive airflow. If it’s going to be away from dust, it’s always good to have positive airflow
Lets say my room sometimes gets a little dusty
Well are you wanting rack chassis or tower?
It all depends on what you wanna do
Just a tower, simple home build
So you wanna go with something that’s like a meshify
But go B450 since you don’t need the features of a B550
Ryzen 9 5900X is a good CPU but still quite pricy, so maybe a 3900X would work better for you.
Well I was thinking a 3900X
But you would need a shitty gpu (anything what’s pci-e) for the original install
Since 3900X doesn’t have an IGPU
Only ryzen that has an IGPU is any ending with a G
Well I could actually add a decent gpu for the build
That’s even better. But for the motherboard
Any B450 with good VRM’s like an ASUS tuf or something
Do I really need a fancy tower?
Not really, but the meshify has really good air filters
So doesn’t take in a lot of dust
The best defence is a good offence
Anything else I would need? I really never built a machine or a pc before
For now I know I need:
Ram
Cpu
GPU
Motherboard
Cooling
meshify
Ooo well if you give me a budget and what you wanna do with it, I can throw together a parts list if you would like
Probably from 500-650. I wanna host multiple game instances (not always), and personal stuff. Storaging files, test some whatever app I find on the internet
USD?
Yes, sorry
Well with that budget, 2nd hand is gonna be the way
Since the CPU alone is $400
(New)
I am seeing some insane discounts on newegg tho
Ahh I’m not US, so I’m not sure about that but I’ll make you a little list around that price.
Check out newegg for the us price, there are great discounts
And then ofc you can do some digging / get comparable stuff with what you have around you
Okay
Just send the necessary specs, after all I do some extense digging on discounts haha
Yeah pretty much
That’s what I’m doing just like “template” of what you kinda want
Thats great, tysm
And ofc you can go second hand but all new at normal EU pricing is like $1300 but ofc that’s all new and very much overpriced
Second hand and heavy discount
I would say you could get it for $500-550 easy
Daaamn
Thing is
I highly doubt that on my country they sell servers like those
But I always can bring stuff from the us to here
What country are you from? They aren’t like “server” spec
They are general consumer parts
Yeah I know but I mean
Older high end stuff and new mid range
Where I usually buy 2nd hand stuff
I know that they are general consumer parts
Let me check tho
And by the way
On argentina stuff is double the price than on the us
Since yk, the economy situation 😂
Part List - AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, GeForce RTX 3060 12GB, Corsair 3000D...
Part List - AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, GeForce RTX 3060 12GB, Corsair 3000D AIRFLOW ATX Mid Tower
The GPU and PSU are place holders
Since you don’t need an insane GPU or PSU. Just not a bomb
I see
Here the prices aren’t that bad (Uk) and it’s second hand market. It’s pretty cheap.
I can buy AMD epyc + mobo + RAM for $700
Check this out

Look at the discount hahaha
Yeah that’s pretty good
That’s still 50% of your budget
yeah budget is not strict
3900X second hand is $100
I could always go higher
Yeah but wouldnt second hand stuff just make things worse?
Even though Im thinking about it
Here’s a way of thinking about it
CPU’s are soo precise and perfectly made that a CPU will last 20 years
A motherboard won’t, that’s why the CPU’s are cheap and the mobos are expensive
That’s why 4770K’s are still a thing on starter pcs
Because you can get one for $50 but the mobos are $200
Actually it is around 250
Hmm
I see
But a R9-3900X or a 5900X will easily do the tasks you want for the next 5 years atleast
Thanks for the opinion, appreciate it
