playing with friend in different region

ig there’s region lock, but i added a friend in northern mexico while i’m on the west coast. i’ve connected with ppl in canada, so i want to know if it’s possible to play with this friend? we’ve added each other already but i don’t know if region affects frq. if not, are there any free vpns or ways to add to my servers without changing the whole region of my main account?
