Bad mac performance
im getting awful frames on decent resolution. only really low res works well, and during anything heavy(bossfights and things). i do have quite a few mods enabled, but my mac is fairly new(m2 max 2023). i tried using retro, it helped, but still unplayable

I found a way how to fix it a little bit
Mac OS silicon chips fps drops possible fix
Since there were multiple posts from people having issues running terraria on macs with apple silicon, and no solution provided (or at least none that I've found):
Running Terraria with Vulkan (MoltenVK actually), which for some reason doesn't seem to be the default one, fixed the issue for me completely. No lags so far, running on stable 60 fps even with frame rate skip off.
If you're on silicon, put
/gldevice:Vulkan
into your game launch options and try it out.

It helped me a little but still lags when fighting bosses like supreme calamitas n stuff

i tried setting my game launch option to vulkan and i didn't see any improvement to my framerate sadly. I'm using a M1 max macbook. Did I not set up vulkan properly?
oh shit nvm it works now for some reason

30fps -> 60fps hurray

this fix is amazing, took me up from a 50 fps max to a smooth 60 fps, staying fairly consistent even with projectile spam and during bosses like SCal
why is this not the default for macs?

Im unsure but i think tmodloader doesnt have bug testers n fixes for mac
I am prob wrong but yeah
It has terrible optimisation on mac
Calamity literally dies when fighting any major boss. Even if you have all of the performance things on like less particles etc
