straw hole debate
wise-white•9mo ago
Infinite? WAS THAT AN INFINITE CHEF REFERENCE?
it’s 1
straw? WAS THAT A SANDBOXELS REFERENCE?
oh hey lvl 68
jolly-crimson•9mo ago
one really deep hole
two? WAS THAT A TPOT REFERENCE?
reason for 1 hole:

is this one or 2 holes
it’s 1
a donut has 1 hole
a tall donut has 1 hole
a straw is a tall donut
donut holes
@BATATA CAT explain why ∞ holes
foreign-sapphire•9mo ago
Bc technically infinity can be diffferent sizes some infinities are bigger than other so i chose a infinity equal to 1
https://tenor.com/view/think-smart-gif-22411928
you were almost correct
foreign-sapphire•9mo ago
🥲
hmm well maybe you can technically still be
foreign-sapphire•9mo ago
:Rue: you really think so
:moji_troll:

desmos wont allow for infinity to be plugged in, but, if it did, it would return 1
rare-sapphire•9mo ago
It’s 1
sunny-green•9mo ago
yknow since atoms never touch there would be a HUGE number of holes that would be too much to count so can be known as infinity
maybe close to infinity but not truly
close to infinityhow like isn’t infinity meant to be endless
true
gradual-turquoise•9mo ago
0 : if bent into a toric shape
1 : if folded into a b shaped thing
2 : if straight, one on both ends
infinity: impossible, for obvious reasons
Infinity is not a massive number
It's a concept
one on both endsthat would be an opening not a hole
gradual-turquoise•9mo ago
hole=opening
hole =/= opening
in some context yes
regarding a straw no
a hole could be an opening
gradual-turquoise•9mo ago
still, it just means:
0: if flattened
1: if straight
2: if pinched in the middle
Infinite: same reason as before
but an opening could also not be a hole
a hole is a hollow place in something
a straw is a hollow
gradual-turquoise•9mo ago
but it doesn't matter anyway
thus it’s a hole
gradual-turquoise•9mo ago
infinity is the only impossible one
hey i never mentioned infinity
gradual-turquoise•9mo ago
this version treats them as holes, not openings

any objections?
the cylinder on the right totally has a hole
not a hole
if u dig in the ground, u make a hole, and it’s just like that
is this a hole?

rare-sapphire•9mo ago
ja
is this a hole?

rare-sapphire•9mo ago
i think it depends on whether. or not it is supposed to be there
like if i dig a hole in the ground then yes
but like a spoon doesnt have a hole even if it has an indent

my definition of a hole is it has to lead somewhere, it could be nothing but atleast somewhere
rare-sapphire•9mo ago
i think the part surrounding it needs to be thicker than the part in it
sensitive-blue•9mo ago
i say “infinite” but it’s nerd time
so does this have a hole?

sensitive-blue•9mo ago
there are a lot of atoms in the straw, and atoms are usually connected in a hexagon formation (prob)
does a cup have a hole
a coffee mug has a hole
right where the handle is
is this a hole

sensitive-blue•9mo ago
fill a 2d space with a lot of balls with collisions for example
that is a pit
sensitive-blue•9mo ago
see the triangle spacing?
that is also the spacing between atoms

:moji_troll:
hmmm

i thought this was a straw hole debate
not a “what is a hole” debate
according to google, straws have 2 or 1 hole, depending on if you use formal/informal

sensitive-blue•9mo ago
so the amount of visible holes are 2 but the amount of all of the holes are (a/3) + 2 where a = the amount of atoms in a straw
here is my brand new cup i just bought from pretend-mart

does my cup have a hole in it now?

sensitive-blue•9mo ago
yes
1 hole to be exact
hmmm thats not good
i must get that hole fixed!
1 hole is meant to be there
the other isnt
is there any more holes in my cup?

also how tf do you fix a glass cup
sensitive-blue•9mo ago
that cup does not have 2 holes. pits are holes with a bottom, holes are pits that appear as pits in the front and opposite direction
pits are holes
holes are pits that appear as holes?
you cant define a word using itself
ah yes variable = variable
wait no
ok so

is this what we are settling on
yep
seems fair to me
does this have a hole in it?

i bring up: swiss cheese
question 1: are these holes that u see?

i cant tell if theres any "topological" holes
no that’s a cut
i think anybody would say swiss cheese has holes!
ok
and if it does, what about the holes inside, with no exits?
oops
how about now

crater
is a crater a hole?

probably
okay, well, how about now?

in ontomata, a hole is simply any lack of material in material
hm thats an interesting definition
i believe a straw would have 1 hole in ontomataverse
i think so too
its a singular cylinder shaped absence of material in the plastic
everything in ontomata exists because it is defined
hmm what would happen if you took a straw
and cut it down the middle, and flattened it into a sheet
it probably wouldnt be useful anymore
jolly-crimson•9mo ago
brain not braining..
oh my
it could still be useful if u folded the half in half
would this be a hole since usually the sphere is meant to be a bit taller than this

hmmmm
no
i think it needs some depth
otherwise everything has holes everywhere
hmm
that’s a face (side)
what about this little section here in my double-donut?

it has depth
it’s just 2 material combined
hmmmm id say it’s a hole
id say it’s a cut
interesting
but there’s nothing different from a cross section of a hole in the ground
it’s just a different dimension of hole
new thread: what the fuck is a hole
ontomatically, an absence of material in another material
topologically, a structure that prevents the object from being shrunk to a point
ontomacanonically
logically, its hard to define hole
since
things are complicated
a normal person would say a pit in the ground is a hole
but a normal person would also say a plate doesnt have holes
would a normal person say a bowl has a hole in it?
we need to find a normal person
extended-salmon•9mo ago
i just read this entire debat
exotic-emerald•9mo ago
If you drilled through the core of the earth, from 1 side to the other, there would be 2 possible perspectives, making it 2 holes or 1 very deep hole, meaning that a straw's holes depend on the perspective, if you look INTO the straw, then there is 1 hole, but if you look at the sides, then there are 2
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
it has topologically 1 hole
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
That's not a thing lol
Cylinder has one hold
Yes
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
the one on the right?
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Yes
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
it doesn't
that's not a hole
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Yes it is
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
you can flatten the cylinder and you don't have it anymore
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Huh?
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
and if you flatten a torus the hole will not disappear
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Dafuqs a torus?
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
a doughnut
a bagel
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
It becomes one hole
Instead of 2
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
it was always 1 hole
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Nuh uh
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
yuh uh
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Nuh uh
Straw has 2 holes
Tortus has 2 holes
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
if I were to shoot someone, would they have 2 bullet holes?
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Yes
If
It didn't get stopped
By inside of body
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
tens of thousands police reports are wrong then
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
K?
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
that's a single bullet hole
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Appeal to not even an authority
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
it just went all the way through
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Nuh uh
It's 2
wise-white•9mo ago
it is a single bullet hole
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
appeal to science, topology is well studied
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Nuh the fuck uh
Science calls things that shouldn't be called things the things they shouldn't be called
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
no, you do that
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Nuh uh
For example
The word theory
Means different things
Between an official and unofficial context
Same with hole
wise-white•9mo ago
your brain is a theory
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Or like chemical
One that is true
It's a theory about how smart it is
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
that's why I said topologically
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Yea
I don't care about topolo-whatever
Hole is an opening
technically since i can not verify wether or not he (or his brain) actually exists, true
anyways this guy is clearly insane and should not be counted
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
it's a study about objects and how they deform so about as accurate as it gets
better than someone who said 0
actually that has some merit and makes some sense
wise-white•9mo ago
Enlighten me
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
it's a plane that is rolled up
wise-white•9mo ago
oh yeah
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
that creates a hole but still
some people might also not count it as a hole since its meant to be there
wise-white•9mo ago
i think its like
the amount of holes there is supposed to be + the amount added
jesus christ i can not figure out for the life of me how to get this eevee glass shader to act normally. anyways how many holes does it have

optimistic-gold•9mo ago
I think 3?
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Nuh uh
correct-apricot•9mo ago
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-PQ-pUVeho
to anybody who voted 0, 2 or infinte holes:
its topology which is math which is always correct
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Nuh uh
correct-apricot•9mo ago
if you do it your way then its going to be almost impossible to count holes in a complicated object
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
If you ask a person on the street what a chemical is
And you ask a scientist what a chemical is
You will get 2 very different answers
If you ask (certain) mathematicians what a trapezoid is
And a random person on the street what a trapezoid is
You will get different answers
It's the same with hole
correct-apricot•9mo ago
asking how many holes a straw has and getting 1 is both mathematicly correct and intuitively correct
fascinating-indigo•9mo ago
Nuh uh
It's 2
correct-apricot•9mo ago
well this is 2
what's worse is the other person who voted infinity, (probably because of all the bumps in the straw material)
that isn't counted
optimistic-gold•9mo ago
yeah because a random person on the street is not as educated as the scientist
and out of all things you could've choose, you chose 2 things that have a really solid definition
is a bald spot a hole
extended-salmon•8mo ago
bro wha
exotic-emerald•7mo ago
do the tiny holes in your hair follicles count as holes or are they too small
those are pores
gradual-turquoise•7mo ago
in the topological sense, no
