Mods vs. Datapacks: Capabilities and Performance
I'm currently seting up a new adventure server, in which I want to change some game mechanics.
This server will use some mods from Fabric API. My main concern is creating a server that, as much as it changes some game mechanics and introduces new ones, have most of the content handled server-side so it can be enjoyed by people with a lighter build.
With the statement above, I have this question about the performance and capability extent of mods vs. datapack.
Let's consider 3 modifications that have either the mod or datapack alternative, in 3 different segments:
- Ender Dragon Fight Remastered (https://modrinth.com/datapack/edf-remastered) tweaks on already existing mechanics.
- Terralith (https://modrinth.com/datapack/terralith/) on vanillla world generation
- Incendium (https://modrinth.com/datapack/incendium) on new content (new mobs and items).
1. Are there any difference on performance (client and server side) by choosing datapacks instead of a Fabric mod?
2. The datapack version of a modification (like Ender Dragon Remastered or Incendium that adds/heavilly tweaks content) is any more limited than the modded version? Will the two modifications be equal in term of changes?
