Can’t get GTAV to work with Heroic Launcher

I tried this: " Yes, the R* launcher is causing issues on Heroic as of lately, but it can be fixed using the following steps (copied from Lemmy): After installing the game, run it once so it installs the Rockstar launcher, log in (you've already done this) Close the Rockstar launcher In the game install folder, create a file called fix.bat with this content (the file has to be in the same folder as PlayGTAV.exe): start /B "null" "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Launcher\LauncherPatcher.exe" ping -n 20 localhost > nul ./PlayGTAV.exe %* 4. working for me this morning. I had to update hero, clear chace, re authenticate Epic through Hero, and Rockstart when lauching GTA It worked only when I launched GTA in Game Mode, it would not launch in desktop mode

on linux? you need to install the epic game launcher directly or use lutris to do everything for you but for me only ever heroic worked, lutris and the standalone launcher method always made the game crash after 5-6 minutes

it's strange tho, because when the launcher starts, you can see another window opening for a split second which says: Installing that's the window that opens when the game is loading behind the launcher

Steps I took: 1. Updated Hero 2. cleared Cache 3. Attempted to launch GTA in Desktop mode and it failed 4. Swapped to Game Mode and launched again 5. Asked to reauthentice with Rockstar Launcher, this worked. note, I had the .bat hack working prior to this

Yup, that’s the thing with steam all good, I also have RDR2 on steam and everything is fine, it something to do with Heroic. GTA V is little expensive for me on steam right now, and since I had perfectly working before, I will just wait till they update something.

This is because rockstar launcher changed the way it talks to EGL to authenticate games. and heroic, (more specifically legendary) probably does not support this new method.. and it wouldnt surprise me if rockstar launcher is the only thing that does it this way so methods to play the game like lutris or setting up a bottle with EGL should probably work as using EGL clearly works.

can anyone try this workaround? - create a text file called fix.bat next to where the PlayGTAV.exe is located (the game installation folder) - put this content inside the file (copy paste it, don't type it)

I don't own RDR2 so I'm not sure about that one, looks like it needs something different but I don't have the game on epic to try that out and debug it if you have the game working with the epic games launcher it might be useful to see a list of the system processes when the game is running

Well, weirdly, the above fix launches the battleye installer for me and not the game. If I change the last line to run GTA5.exe then it launches the actual game but not the R* launcher and thus complains that it's not connected to rockstar services. If then I try to launch R* launcher, it apprantly can't seem to initialize, even after following the instructions at "https://docs.getwhisky.app/game-support/gta-5.html" .

Thanks. I actually ended up going to those-websites-we-shall-not-name and grabbed a copy of GTA V divorced from R* to play on my mac. The offline mode clearly works... it's the launcher which can't keep it together and I have had enough of them for changing the terms after the sale.

when you install the game it lets you pick where to install it one thing that can happen though is that if you use the flatpak version of heroic and it doesn't have access to that directory, it may try to install it but then it won't be able to do that and thing it was installed or something like that so if you use heroic flatpak, make sure it has access to the drive you want to use using Flatseal

oh sorry I misunderstood, there's a move game feature in the game page > 3 dots menu you can't download a game twice another option is: - rename the original install folder - heroic will think it's not available anymore - try to run the non-available game - heroic will tell you it seem the game is removed and ask you if you want to mark it as not installed - then you can install the game again but you can't have the same game installed twice and heroic recognize both at the same time if the game shows as installed but not available and you try to play it it should ask you to remove it from the installed list now I re-read and I think my last sentence is what you want? I misunderstood the message twice haha

Heroic has settings "areas", one global, and one game-specific. You want to press the ⚙️ icon on the game card to open the game-specific settings, not the "Settings" sidebar entry (which opens the global settings)

Yup that's set correctly there Have you tried using Whisky instead of CrossOver? CX doesn't really give any helpful logs, and as far as I know, Whisky should work as well To use Whisky in Heroic, you just have to install it and restart Heroic (if you had it open). Heroic will then detect that you've installed Whisky. In the game settings again, the "Wine Version" dropdown will now have an option for using Whisky. Select that, then re-run the game

hmm - even trying to open the Rockstar Launcher explicitly doesn't work either - it still requests to install BattlEye (even though I have disabled it in Settings of SocialClubHelper.exe). I'm so fed up with this that I think I'm going to have to go to those-websites-we-shall-not-name and get rid of this R* Launcher garbage.

it definitely does for sure! I'm noticing one tradeoff is I don't have access to my cloud save (wasn't really far and just redid all the missions - what an amazing game). Resolution setting was a bit wonky using Whisky (works in CrossOver but it doesn't look necessary to use it). glad I don't have to deal with Steam Input shenanigans to get my DualSense to work wirelessly like in Windows. So happy I can play GTA on my M1 now!

yeah the prefix is actually where all the settings are if you want to over simplify it the game files are installed in another location so reinstalling doesnt really do anything since those files will be identical to what you'd download ... and if there's a problem there, running verify install will resolve any corruption you can try increasing the wait time on the fix.bat file from 20 seconds to something bigger 30 or 40

it's based on Fedora Atomic with your choice of DE. it's more flexible than SteamOS's immutability, but the Atomic-ness of it is still like that. there are more gaming related things preloaded, and you can use the Deck images if you want a Steam Deck-like system of booting right into game mode

Lutris will have you install and use the Epic launcher, and I wouldn't recommend the Epic launcher to anyone haha. You can just install the Heroic flatpak yourself. Fedora Atomic is Silverblue or Kinoite. I like Fedora because it strikes a good balance between bleeding edge Arch and backdated Ubuntu let's take this part of the conversation to #🌍-offtopic

okay some interesting things are happening the launcher is updating itself, you have to alt-tab to get to that because with the fix.bat the gtav binary takes focus, i'm gonna continue reporting what i notice okay, signed in to the rockstar services, main game still says not logged in does the hanging on story mode thing. i'm going to try wine-ge after purging prefix since maybe that was the issue? just to eliminate it as a possibility i didn't have to log in again? weird

it still says no saved credentials? do other Epic games work? check in settings > logs > epic/legendary, maybe there's an error there
