Immich with Umbrel & NAS
Hello everyone!
I'm new to this channel and would like to start using Immich for a local backup of my pictures.
I’ve installed Umbrel OS (https://umbrel.com/) and the Immich application. However, I want to use a NAS in my network for storage. Unfortunately, Immich only reads hard drives connected directly via USB, and the USB hard drive I currently have is already in use for other purposes.
The NAS I want to use is a Western Digital 4TB (RAID1):

I can create a shared folder with account credentials on this NAS for Immich to use as storage for my pictures.
Is this possible?
Is there a way to achieve my goal?
Let me know!

Information
In order to be able to effectively help you, we need you to provide clear information to show what the problem is. The exact details needed vary per case, but here is a list of things to consider:
- Your docker-compose.yml and .env files.
- Logs from all the containers and their status (see above).
- All the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far.
- Any recent changes you've made to Immich or your system.
- Details about your system (both software/OS and hardware).
- Details about your storage (filesystems, type of disks, output of commands like fdisk -l
and df -h
).
- The version of the Immich server, mobile app, and other relevant pieces.
- Any other information that you think might be relevant.
Please paste files and logs with proper code formatting, and especially avoid blurry screenshots.
Without the right information we can't work out what the problem is. Help us help you ;)
If this ticket can be closed you can use the /close
command, and re-open it later if needed. You will probably have to reach out to umbrel support. We have no control over how a specific OS handles these situations. The underlying principle of storing the media on a NAS seperate from the main system is fine and many people do it.
You can wait for a response here if anyone has tried but not many people run this setup.
Fwiw we recommend just using a standard Linux distro. These "simple" oses often make things harder :p
Hello, I'm back. I removed Umbrella OS and installed Raspberry Pi OS (or just "Raspbian"). I installed Immich using this script:
https://immich.app/docs/install/script
Then, I mounted the NAS folder with this command:
sudo mount -t cifs -o username=immich,password='...'//<NAS_IP>/Immich /mnt/photos
Now, when I try to configure this mount to happen automatically at every restart, I get this error:
//<NAS_IP>/Immich /mnt/photos cifs username=immich,password='...',iocharset=utf8,vers=3.0 0 0
-bash: //<NAS_IP>/Immich: No such file or directory
After this, I assume I need to modify the .env file's upload_folder setting.
I hope someone can help me. Thank you

How to mount CIFS shares permanently | Ubuntu
Ubuntu is an open source software operating system that runs from the desktop, to the cloud, to all your internet connected things.
Restart of the container or restart of your RPi?
It might be your container is starting faster than the NAS is being mounted

docker-compose wait to launch until a host filesystem is mounted
The focus of this question is forcing docker-compose to wait to launch a mysql container until a host filesystem is mounted. In my case the host filesystem holds the mysql database files.
