Death Stranding Director's Cut stopped working for no apparent reason

Hello, Yesterday (about 10h ago) DS Directors Cut was running with no issues, but today the first loading and splash screen goes extremely fast and then black screen (can't get to main menu). I didn't update anything from my OS, the only thing I can imagine is that new VKD3D version 2.14.0 (released 3 days ago) broke something, but I don't know how to check yesterday's logs to see if it was already being used. I'm running Ubuntu 22.04 on Wayland because in X11 the game used to show a black screen (and now it doesn't even start). I had always played with Wine-GE-Latest, but I just tried Wine-GE-proton8-14, proton 9 and proton experimental and they all show the same issue. I also tried disabling eSync, fSync and dedicated graphics, to no avail.

I don't know how umu works with Wine, but maybe try disabling the umu? Also don't mix proton prefixes with wine prefixes. This will mess your things up. If you already did, then backup your saves, nuke the prefix, run game again to recreate it and copy saves back

thanks for the reply! already nuked the prefix several times and nothing changed, sorry for posting one of the logs before doing it umu was disabled

Wine-GE is no longer maintained so it's possible that newer VKD3D broke something

what is the recommended version to use now?

right now its best to use umu + proton-GE

Maybe another thing to try would be to try the flatpak version of the HGL? It would download it's own version of mesa etc. This way we could rule out any changes in the system

Thanks for the idea! I also should reinstall the game from the flatpak version and not just import it, right?

i think importing should be enough

Alright, will try later, thanks for the help

if it won't work, please add WINEDEBUG=+fixme to the env variables in game this will enable verbose logging

Will do, thanks for the tip Game now works at first try without changing anything. Classic #gamingonlinux I guess. Only thing I changed was that I shut down and booted the computer later. Does umu need an HGL/full system restart to work after being enabled? the only other thing I can think about is being connected to AC to be honest thanks for the help m3e, I learned some things about debugging and that umu+protonGE is the new recommendation. Here is the successful log. Funny how umu does not manage to recognize the game as DS Director's Cut for some reason

successful and last fail log are virtually the same. No clue.

Proton has logging disabled by default, so you won't see anything useful without either WINEDEBUG=??? with umu or plain PROTON_LOG=1 otherwise

is WINEDEBUG=+fixme enough to add by default, just in case?

It's better to have logs disabled by default. Some games can generate a large amount of logs and only enable it one you are debugging a failing case

got it m3e. Thank you so much, you have been so helpful. were you writing something more?

I've been looking if there are any protonfixes for Death Stranding and I don't think so. That's why umu does not care about what game it is Glad it's working ok

thanks for clarifying how umu works. I think it will surely be a great unifying step in linux gaming!
