Pros / Cons Storage Template
I've been reworking my home server and decided to switch to Immich as my primary photo software this time around. I uploaded my Google photo files from multiple accounts but wanted to do a backup of the photos once they were in the same place. After some digging I noticed the storage template types and couldn't help but wonder what are the pro/cons of each one. When looking at the wiki it's unclear to me what the benefits of one over the other is. If I had to guess Storage Template Off is faster server side? But hoping someone could explain this one out for me.

Successfully submitted, a tag has been added to inform contributors. :white_check_mark:Storage template is really for if you care what the files look like in the file system.
If you don't there's no need to turn it on.
It only comes with a performance penalty if you need to copy the files from upload to library instead of just being able to move them.
If you migrate from Storage Template from Storage Template are the old src files deleted after being moved to the new file structure or do they remain / have duplicate photos on the server.
If the FS allows it, they're moved, otherwise copied and deleted
Would the previous folders get deleted then or just the files?
I'm fairly certain the old folders are removed when finally empty but not 100% sure
I believe the folders remain
the folder remains because it will be created again anyway
He's asking if the folder in the storage template will be removed if you move to a different template style I think
oh
sorry about that, iirc, they will be removed
